I'm writing a composition, and I can go with a 4:2 sig not using triplets, but I'd like to use them if I could. What would the time sig be for measures that fit 5 triplets (regular, length-of-a-quarter-note triplets) but also a third of a triplet. (The last 2/3 of the triplet would spill across the bar line) In more basic terms, i'd like 16 triplets to fit into 3 bars, if possible, but i'm kindof thinking that a third of a triplet is a little too complex. If any alternatives pop out please let me know, or if you know that this definitely won't work without a ridiculously complex time sig. Thanks!

I would recommend using 8 as the basis of your notes, as you'd like it to have the feel of triplets. For the top number, you can basically split it up however you like, and simply write it like: 3+3+2 or whatever. I recommend not making it 5 triplets plus an eighth if you wish anyone to attempt playing it. I think it's best to make it as simple as possible to count. Maybe alternate measures of 9/8 and a measure of 2/8. It's hard to tell exactly what would work best, but see if that helps.
