What do you think? I was flabbergasted and found it very exciting but perhaps a little bit "over the top". Anyone ever heard them perform live?

I was trying to copy the URL but for some reason it won't work so to see the videos I'm referring to please go to youtube.com and enter "Anderson and Roe". Then listen to Libertango and Blue Danube Fantasy.

Amazing and certainly original!

There was recently a YouTube link here to Anderson (tee-shirt, jeans, bare-foot, and with a sappy look-deeply-into-my-eyes[1] introduction about "heaven" and "peace") playing the Petri transcription of Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze." The playing itself didn't seem to garner much enthusiasm from those who viewed it.

LINK

[1] ... although the opening frames after the introduction are more like "look deeply into the roots of my hair" ...

Regards,

Yes, I would agree that this solo performance was not particularly good IMHO. But check out his duo performances with Roe!

Perhaps someone can post the link. For some reason when I highlight the URL, my computer doesn't allow me to copy it. Probably some dumb mistake on my part.

I really enjoy their videos and hope they put out more. They seem to be very witty, inventive, and talented(especially Elizabeth)!

Yes, I did. I don't deny that there is some very virtuosic playing in those videos and that Anderson and Roe work extremely well together.

I'm not convinced that some of the "gimmickry" always works, it's occasionally a little too contrived for my taste. On the other hand, there is much to be said - apart from the virtuoso playing - of the sheer fun they appear to have while playing these transcriptions. Certainly music-making should be a joy; to make it fun, too, while tackling some of the technical challenges in these pieces is an added bonus.

Regards,

Yes and I think they might appeal to a different audience than usually goes to classical concerts.
Something like The 5 Browns who are apparently treated like rock stars when they perform at universities. Anderson actually wrote (transcribed) some of the pieces that The 5 Browns play.

They're good pianists, but Anderson seems like the exact opposite of what Bronfman was describing in the recent NYT article posted here.

For that reason, I don't find the duo particularly appealing, although I've heard Roe in a traditional recital format and enjoyed it very much.

I hope to attend a recital of Roe's someday. But most recently, I was very glad to hear her perform on the radio Smetana's Poetic Polka in g minor. Because most pianists today seem to dismiss his piano works as salon music, I give kudos to her for not only playing his music but playing it so well. She also infuses the piece with a lot of her personality...very individual and idiomatic. I posted the link to the audio clip of this performance before, but here it is again:
http://tinyurl.com/295u8v
The piece begins at the 10:43 and finishes at around 14:33. (The piece gets really interesting from 11:46 onwards.)

At her website, I adore her playing in that soundclip of Gretchen am Spinnrade, and in the first movement of Shostakovich's Piano Quintet.

And I just ordered the DVD of her recital at the 2005 Van Cliburn Competition.

I wish her a prosperous and fulfilling music career.
