Of course, I understand that no musician plays a particular piece best. Yet, right now, Gilels suits me well when he is playing Scarlatti. Does anyone have an opinion or preference relative to this topic?
Sincerely,
Kenney

I think Horowitz plays Scarlatti very well. Check out his "The Celebrated Scarlatti Recordins" under Sony label.

Tony, thanks a million! I think, somewhere in my head I wanted to hear what you had stated. Why? Because I love VH and can't seem to figure out what he is trying to do with the Scarlatti pieces relative to Gilels, whom I connect with. Bottom line of course is that I want to be able to have VH's stuff hit me, because I love so many of his other interpretations. This is the beauty of listening though--that we have choices.
Sincerely,
Kenney

Pogorelich also has a wonderful Scarlatti disc.

I prefer Gilels for Brahms & Liszt, personally.

My favorite Scarlatti performer is Maria Tipo. I once heard her do 12 Scarlatti sonatas as the second half of a program that had the 4 Chopin Ballades as the first half. She has recorded some all Scarlatti discs.

Yes, Maria Tipo is tops in the Scarlatti sonatas. Lots of pianists try to play the sonatas in a percussive manner imitating the harpsichord. In contrast, she brings a lightness and ethereality to them. Her b minor is my favorite. My parents had the record when I was a kid. Now I have it on CD doubled up with Mozart concerti.

I love Dubravka Tomsic's CD of the Scarlatti sonatas. It's perfectly sparkly, and a wonderful recording.
