I have an Horugel grand--5'10" I think--and I would like some information on it if that's possible from some of the well-informed afficionadas of piano manufacturers and history.

The model--from the plate--is G-3 and the only number I can find that is possibly the serial number is 2111. It's finished in rosewood with what seems to be a polyurethane coat (or something similar) and the bridge has become unglued in the middle register--specifically the F# above middle C. It causes a peculiar sound for the F#. It looks as tho two separate pieces were used for the bridge and has become unglued at that joint. Otherwise it seems to be ok.

Any information about the year, etc., will be appreciated and I think, but I'm not sure, that Samick took over the company and it's similar to a Samick.

Horugel was manufactured by Samick, back in the late 70's until (I believe) the early 80's. As far as building quality pianos back then, it was all pretty new to Samick and I think they used that brand for a "learning tool" to try different building processes.

This scenario is not much different than the learning process Yamaha experienced in the 60's when they first brought acoustic pianos to the US. They had a severe moisture problem (too much moisture in the wood) from which they developed an early version of "destination seasoning" of the wood (using wood with LESS moisture for pianos coming to the US). It was a learning process from which they learned.

It is my understanding that the Horugel was a brand from which Samick learned as well. They obviously have made great strides since that time!

Hope that helps.

A friend bought this one in 1986 and, after an attempt to learn to play, she quit and took up another activity not so demanding. She let me have the piano and it is ok except for the bridge separation. I have a block of wood pressing down on that part and it is ok after that. The only other option would be to take off the strings and do it properly. Thanks for your input and that it is similar to or an early 'Samick' just confirms what I thought.

Hi, I bought a Horugel and think it's really an amazing instrument. Samick Musical Instruments made the piano after acquiring the name from the German maker. Here is a link to Samick history http://samick.co.kr/eng/about/company_2.php?playNum=1

Features on my Horugel make it very unique. Treble strings are individually hitched. It has a 19 ply Falcon Wood ( European Beach ). Longer playing surface on the key-tops by about a 1/2" longer. All and all the piano is really well made as I have found all grand pianos that were made in South Korea. I have a specification sheet if anyone wants one emailed to them.

Have fun
