Hello,

Can anyone advise me on how to teach a student to
understand semiquaver effectively ? My 6 year old cousin can
only understand what a quaver is and she cannot answer Grade 1 questions on note values and rests whenever semiquavers are involved.

Can she play them? If so, it's just a step in cognitive ability to grasp the concept (somewhat like reading letters).

However, if she cannot play any divisions of notes, then it sounds like you should try some rhythm and counting exercises, perhaps involving large muscle movements like walking and clapping. For example, have her walk around the room in time to the quavers and clap in time to the semiquavers.

For a lot of small children, the concept of regular division of time does not come easily. Exercises like the above can help by involving motor memory in learning rhythm.
