Trills come up in these messages frequently and goodness knows they appear in a lot of music that we play. Can anyone recommend a good book on trills? One that explains the rules of trilling in different periods and styles.

Unless, of course, someone here can formulate the whole thing in a nutshell (?)

I would like to know also.

If you want to see someone perform the most graceful and beautiful trills...watch footage of Glenn Gould : )

Somehow I knew how your second sentence was going to end after reading just the first 5 words. Do I have ESP or what?

A whole book on trills? How much would there be to say apart from which periods favored starting on a leading upper or lower note and which periods favored starting on the principal note; which period favored precisely timed, rhythmic trills and which favored a freer, non-rhythmic (even accelerating or decelerating) trill?

Then there's the trill with a prepared appoggiatura, and the trill with a turned ending, etc.

You could probably do it in a couple of well-written paragraphs, or maybe one short chapter.

Would you settle for a book on all types of ornamentation? Groves lists three columns of books on ornaments and ornamentation.

Regards,

BruceD,

A chapter would do if that would cover it. It just seems the variations are endless. Isn't it, apart from period, also a matter of leading notes or passing notes, etc. I don't have a comprehensive overview; that's what the (short) book is for. Also, I'm including some types of ornamentation under the topic of trill. I'll gladly settle for a book on all ornamentation and I'll look into Groves. Thanks much.

Eh, it's just because I can relate Glenn Gould to any subject anyone can think of.

There is a book, "Ornamentation: A Question and Answer Manual" by Valery Lloyd-Watts and Carole L. Bigler with the assistance of Willard A. Palmer. See http://www.morethanmusic.com/html/vlw_pub.html

It perpetuates Willard Palmer's somewhat extreme views. (He didn't approve of any "on the note" trills in classic period compostions, even though there is evidence these were played when making sense melodically. Also, he ignored inverted mordents.)

Nah, I barely ever talk about Glenn...

By the way, does anyone else love the way Glenn's hair slighty fell over his face and
covered his big beautiful eyes while he was getting deep into a piece?!?

Just kidding....maybe :p
