Roberta here, north of Boston -

I was about to ask for some tempo markings for classical pieces that I have learned on my own, or am re-learning. Then it dawned on me that I could go to Amazon Music, type in the piece I am interested in, and listen to several lines of the piece by various artists. This then suggested to me their interpretation of the tempo and mood.

Beethoven's Pathetique, especially the Grave, showed enormous differences.

I thought this was a great learning tool to share with you.

Do any of you have other internet learning tools?

On metronomes there is a range of markings to use accordding to the suggested animation of many pieces, Andante, Presto, etc.
Also, you might want to listen to David Dubal's program on Wed. eve at 10 p.m on WQXR. The version I have of the Pathetieque gives MM values
Grave is eighth note = 66
Adagio Catabile eighth note = 60
Rondo Allegro half note = 96

If you look at the time on CD you will also see that various pianists play in a variety of tempos.

I think one should play as to their best expression. I piece rushed through can loose something in interpretation, while the technicque may soar.. So take your choice. No one knows what the master composer wanted.

Yep. Click on the "X" at the top right hand corner of your browser, go to the piano, and practice. \:\)

Phlebas!

That is too funny...yet oh so true!!!

Then there is work...got a suggestion for that? LOL!

La P, Is this radio program something that we can get over the internet? What IS the program about (piano, I am thinking, but what aspect? or is it music in general?)

Several of my pieces do not have MM markings nor are there animation names in the titles.

;-(

lilylady, there were a lot of threads about David Dubals "Reflections from the Keyboard" program on WQXR last year. If you use the "SEARCH" function button at the very top of the PW page and fill in the spaces as I've shown below, you'll be given a list of many of these threads.

Its aired only from WQXR in NewYorkCity, at 10:00PM EST. (I THINK thats the correct time.) It IS broadcast on the internet at the same time, but the shows are not archived so you only have ONE chance each week to hear it.

http://www.wqxr.com

click the "Listen Now" button up at the top.
Recently they have restricted their broadcasts to Radio@AOL (unlimited time to AOL subscribers) and Radio@Netscape,( 2 hours free per day) and if you have a MAC rather than a PC, your out of luck, I guess.

If you decide to listen on Wednesday, I'd suggest going to a TUESDAY program to get "set up" because the Radio@aol, at least, is pretty cumbersome and slow to set all the "preferences".

Good luck, \:\)

You may also look at the nature of the music itself. Indeed, even when a tempo marking (allegro/largo etc) exists one usually still has to decide exactly *how* fast or *how* slowly to play. Once you have techical mastery of a piece you'll be free to experiment with different tempos.

So yeah, I agree with phlebas' post. \:\)
Experimentation at the piano and listening to yourself is probably the best learning tool. Recording yourself helps too. Sometimes music sounds different while you're playing it. Listening to yourself on a recording may teach you how to correct for that difference.

RKVS, Bob,

Thank you for spending the time with your post. I appreciate that.

It is still rather cold to work outside for long, so have come in often, today, to the PWF and to practice.

It seems I will not be able to listen to the radio via the internet (don't have AOL nor radio netscape). I did go to their site and forwarded it to a couple of friends to check out. Wonder if they can record it?

I also checked out the past threads on PWF. I have been going back by the month, but had not gotten to 2003 yet!!! Posts on what was heard on the programs was a great suggestion. Guess it didn't catch on though.

Allazart, indeed experimenting with the tempos and interpretations is what it's all about, isn't it!!! What I haven't done for ages, is record myself. WHAT A GREAT TOOL that is. We tend to THINK that we SOUND like we want it to be, instead of what we really SOUND like! I used to suggest this to all students after 3 yrs of lessons. (I don't teach currently)

After a new piano, and several months of getting my chops back, I might venture into that. ;-)

I suppose it will be another learning experience to find out what the current equipment is for recording. (later, later, later!)

Roberta, the lilylady, impatient for warmer weather.....
