The jury members are really earning their $$ at this one. 13 Mephistos in two days! And 12 BACH variations! And every semi-finalist must perform the b minor sonata. . .

Someone may get carried out in a straight-jacket.

Yea ... it's a shame since Liszt wrote more than one Mephisto Waltz yet only one may be chosen. Harmonies poétiques et religieuses contains more pieces than the Benediction. And, nothing from Anees de Pelerinage, which contains the Dante Sonata and many more. It's good to watch tho \:\)

I can't wait for it to start again, someone is tuning it right now. A professor I met from eastman played the Dante Sonata, and it was amazing. I'm really looking forward to this! \:\)

RKVS1,

Have you any relation to the famed rapper KRS1? His beats are bombastic, not to mention their ability to infuse riots.

I've never seen it performed before and I've missed all the others who performed it.

Yeah. The second of the people that I heard. Just now realized that 14:00 really meant 8AM Eastern Standard Time, so I started listening at 2PM which was really the beginning of the 2nd half of the competition.

This should help put some names to faces...

http://www.liszt.nl/2005/conc2005/engels05/openen.htm

I thought ZUO Zhang was REALLY good, glad to see her making it to the next round. She did Benediction, Spanish Rhapsody (which was incredible) and the Liszt/Schubert I think.

I only heard Anton Salnikov and this man can really play Liszt. His rendition of the Mephisto Waltz was refreshing and invigorating. Creative music maker. He emphasized some LH melody notes and then accelerando's through some of the block chords. The ending provided a tremendous contrast between the reserved quiet lyrical section and the furious coda. It was like I was hearing the piece for the very first time again. I was like a 10 year old kid \:\)

I agree. The Spanish Rhapsody was stunning technically and the Schubert transcription was beautifully played. She is very, very musical with a gorgeous tone.

!!!

Last night I tried to see if anybody was playing and when I turned it on I saw an empty auditorium. I left to get a glass of water and when I came back I saw a white figure clearly in the shape of a human walk across the screen.

This REALLY creeped me out and I almost fell out of my chair.

This is NOT a lie, I swear to god!

Mabye... I hope so.

Either way I will always have a doubt in my mind until that is clarified. \:\(

Unless the guy was wearing all COMPLETELY white clothing I am not so sure.

I sure hope you are right though...

I know I wasn't because that night my mom was watching a movie and the next morning she asked me if I had seen that movie.

I swear to god on my life that I was not dreaming and I am telling the truth.

I try to find a rational explanation as well but I always have this thought in the back of my mind.

Jeff. you aren't the only person who has recently reported eerie sightings on Internet links, and indeed off the web as well, particularly in northern Europe.

The link below was originally on the CERN newsletter's outside link page and shows a part of a civilian commercial being made in region north of the Ruhr Valley, only about 200 miles from the site of the Liszt competition.

Reportedly the shot location had to moved back to Bavaria due to the constant interruptions of the filming, though this hasn't been confirmed officially in public.

(The piano store visible in the right foreground about 15 seconds into the clip is not identified by name.)

Who is playing right now? (9:50 am Central Standard Time)

Are they announcing the titles of the selections they will play?

I believe that was Christiaan Kuyvenhoven, but I'm not sure what he was playing. I assume they do announce the titles, but I have never watched a competition like this so I am really not sure.

I think they announce the titles when they introduce the performer(s). However it's all in Dutch (I think) so it's hard to grasp. Rufus Choi is next. From America \:\)

Yep. He's playing "Widmung" right now, Schumann composed - Liszt transcribed.

I have to admit, after the Sonata I didn't think he was going to make the cut. But I think he's improving his chances with these impressive performances after the Sonata.

It does look a little short, but I've usually had the right part of my video window covered with other windows, so I don't really remember how it compares with the other pianos that have been out there.

CEST (in ref to the rest of the broadcast starting at 14:30 ) : what does the "C" stand for? I assume that's NewYork time, but that seems like a change from earlier time postings.

Glad I could clarify this.

[edit] Its starting again.

To Lumi: Bottom line? Saturday morning 11 AM = finals. ( see below)

From their website re the Semi-finals... what's going on today and Wednesday.

Semi-final, 12 and 13 April

Presentation: Gregor Bak

main hall – maximum 9 participants

> Tuesday 12 April, two sessions: 14.30 and 20.15 hrs

> Wednesday 13 April, two sessions: 14.30 and 20.15 hrs

following on jury results

Now the Tuesday FIRST sessions is OVER, and the "WebTV" screen says the NEXT session starts at 14:30 CEST.
I'm assuming its either an error (i.e. it should read "next one starts at 20:15 " or they changed their time baseline from Dutch time to NewYork time.

IF Dutch time IS Greenwich Mean Time (and I think its close enough to London to be GMT) then there is a 5 hour difference to NewYork and another 3 hour difference to you in California.
so 20;15 GMT would be 15.15 NewYork and 12:15 in California.

ok its 1:00 PM Central Standard (Kansas) time and the thing just got started again, so the 14:30 posted on the "TV" means EasternStandardTime of 14 = 2 PM EST = 1pm CentralST.

So their WebSITE time of 20:15 (Dutch? time) = 14:15 EST or 11am for you in California.

so the FINALS start Saturday at 20:15 Dutch time , which should be 11:15 am California time Saturday morning.

I don't know from DayLight Savings.. we're on it here in Kansas and I assume your on it there, so the 11am Saturday morning should still be good.

He's very good. I heard him at the Grace Welsh competition a long time ago (I didn't play that year and was there with a friend) and was impressed with his taste.

I believe she was the first to play today. I caught her B-minor. It was excellent.

Listening to ZUO right now, while on lunch break. (Really should be practicing.) ZUO is very good. I caught her in an earlier round and her Spanish Rhapsody was terrific. Can't wait to hear her Reminiscence.

He's got a good economy of motion. If it wasn't for the hair you might call him a cold fish. (strictly from the absence of excess body motion.)
I think he's very good, as if that doesn't go without saying.

Im talking about Anton Salnikov , here, not the Chinese fellow.

Wow, what a performance of the Sonata by Anton Salnikov. Did you guys see this! The audience broke into a chorus of "bravos" after he was done. With the audience in a standing ovation, he bowed SIX times (I counted \:\) ). The audience could not get enough after he had departed the stage, showering him with more "bravos" so he came back on stage to bow some more.

The last note of the Sonata was sheer genius. It was simple, a nice little staccato. But the way he ended it providing such a stark contrast to the conclusion of the piece was commendable. Go Anton!

He has a tremendous grasp of dynamics and he brings out harmonies that were previously "undiscovered". His virtuosity is a powerful, penetrating one.

Anton's Liszt Concerto performance is scheduled for 3:30 pm Eastern Standard Time for this Saturday. His Hungarian Rhapsody nr 2 performance is scheduled for 5:20 pm Eastern Standard Time Saturday.

I find it of note that he is scheduled to go last despite his name alphabetically comes before Sun Yingdi. Seems like they are using a non-alphabetical schedule \:\)

Says 20.15 CEST. is that central eastern standard time? Doesn't make sense. But that would put it about 5-6 pm Pacific Standard.

CEST is like their time zone I think. Subtract 6 hours from it to get our Eastern Time Zone.

I enjoyed Christaan's playing today. Yingdi, however, I think is more suited for Chopin than Liszt. His style is a softer, more melodic one.

I'm looking forward to Anton's performance.

Salnikov is really good, very poetic and controlled over his playing. he might win, i think.

btw, click on "Change Bandwidth" if your computer cannot handle it, which's exactly what i have to do.

I didn't like the little variation on the beginning though, too jazzy for my taste.

So far Sun's performance is better than the previous one.

I heard the rhapsodies .. my opinions

First: Technique
no.1: weaker than the other two
2nd: better but what annoys that he missed the last chord
3rd: as no.2 or better but with more wrong notes

Second: Music
i liked no.2 then no.1 then no.3 (no.3 started some sections fast then slows then fast again ... that was bad)

Third: Cadenza
1st: did not like it
2nd: the best musically
3rd: the best 'virtuosically' with the first part reminding me of the ocean etude

My favourite version: No.2 , the chinese guy

they played in this order:

1 - Christiaan Kuyvenhoven
2 - Yingdi Sun
3 - Anton Salnikov

I'm inclined to think Sun's performance was the best, musically and technically, in spite of that final chord. Salnikov would easily win in a lookalike competition, though. \:\)

Yea, despite the nice ending to Salnikov's rhapsody, the middle section was a bit disorganized ... and I agree, the tempo was uneven through Salnikov's performance. But, oh, the finish! Thank God for the finish.

The comp was way too political. Salnikov should've won it, Kuyvenhoven was good too. Sun IMO was just playing the notes, there was no point to his playing, like taking a book, and ripping out random pages, so you dont understand whats happening. My favourite contestant was Gulyak, who deserved to go further.

C'mon Max, do you really have a reason for calling the competition "political"? You're accusing the judges of acting in accordance with their own power interests, rather than awarding the prize to the pianist they preferred. That's a serious charge, often made by contestants who don't like the results.

I think Salnikov has a little bit of Cziffra in him. He's an entertainer, but oftentimes this does not translate to pleasing the jury. He could do fine in his career. Yundi placed 3rd in the '99 competition, look at where he is now \:\)

I dunno, I really did not enjoy Kuyvenhoven's performance of either the concerto or the Hungarian Rhapsody too much. But note that he is from the Netherlands. Just a thought.

Salinkov was probably the most musically interesting of the finalists, and had the best cadenza, but was not as good technically as Sun.

One thing I noticed though--Salinkov only missed notes in flourishes and very difficult passages, where we'd expect anybody to miss some .
Sun nailed those parts--double tempo, perfectly even, and crystal clear--but missed the really important notes, like the last note of the rhapsodie.
