Have you ever noticed that some "etudes", supposedly composed as technical exercizes, can actually be some of a composer's most creative expressions?

In such cases, the composer may have actually been experimenting. By posing such experiments as "etudes", that removes the threat of ridicule had they been included in one's canon of serious artistic expressions.

If the experiments are frowned upon, a composer can say, "Hey, I was only creating something to exercize one's technique!". But if they are praised, a composer might be emboldened to bring such creativity into one's serious expressions.
