Hi there! I will be attending Mannes this September and was wondering if anyone else here goes there or will be starting like myself!

Thank you for the congratulations!
I am going to study with Thomas Sauer. I don't have any plans to go to the International Keyboard Festival.

Congrats, PerfectPitch!
We've missed your posts the last 5 months or so. Do you want to fill us in a little bit? Any recitals or competitions in the 2004? When did you find out you had been accepted at Mannes?

I found out that I was accepted after I had played at my audition in the spring! The only competition that I was in was called the NFAA in which I received an Honorable Mention. I also was accepted to Manhattan School of Music, but I decided to attend Mannes! I'll be doing a lot of commuting this September!

Congrats, PerfectPitch! It's the kind of school I dream about going to (but will naturally fall short lol). Interesting that you only did one competition (though it sounds like a pretty big one)--someone once told me that competitions are key to getting into good schools. But I always assumed it was a well-played audition. So, what program did you play for the audition? I hope you haven't already posted this somewhere...

The pieces I played in the audition were J.S. Bach's Prelude & Fugue no. 2 in book 1, Beethoven's "Appassionata", and Ravel's Jeux d'eau. I also had to listen to music and write it out on blank scores; the room was full of people. As the music got more difficult, people left. In the end, the music became dissonant, and there were only 3 other people in the room besides me. I think I did well on that also.

congratulations, pp! how very impressive; entrance into mannes is not easily accomplished. how very exciting for you!
one of the most attractive things about mannes is the tone of the school is more intimate and less intensely competitive, more comradely among the fellow students, than julliard or manhattan school (i have heard, never having attended either of those.) at least when i was there in the first half of the '80s, it was a very warm and intimate place, with a real family feeling.
i attended there for five years in the non-degree program, and studied with elena leonova and robert degaetano. i made some wonderful, life-long friends at mannes, and learned an incredible amount from my fellow students, maybe more from them than in the classroom. i especially learned a lot from my friends who were in the composition program, and regularly took me to contemporary music concerts around town.
i'm sure you are prepared to take full advantage of all that the school has to offer, both curricular and extra-curricular!
for any nyc members reading: one of the great things about mannes is that they are open to the community at large, and you can study the same courses and take the same program with the same teachers as the degree candidates. something to think about if you'd like a refresher in, say, solfege, or theory.
they also have a very strong alexander technique program, which they used to require of all their students. i highly recommend AT for anyone who plays the piano.

Congratulations! Hey, where in the Catskills are you? I'm frequently in Liberty and my duo is playing a concert in Delhi (Delaware County) on August 8th. Maybe we can meet for lunch sometime? Elena http://www.pianofourhands.com
