In some peices of music, there is sometimes a small scale bar above the treble clef, with the same exact notes written in it as what is written in the "normal" staff below. Can someone please help me to understand what this is and why its there?

Relax! You don't have to have three hands to play it! I believe it is just the staff with the notes of the melody for the vocalist to sing. (I play a lot of SONGS on my piano ;\) )

I've seen ossia parts done that way. An ossia in an optional way of playing a passage, phrase, etc. Are you sure it's exactly the same throughout?

Ya its in my Tori Amos and Hanson sheet music. The top is for voice.

Glenn Gould in regards to music:

The problem begins when one forgets the artificiality of it all, when one neglects to pay homage to those designations that to our minds-to our reflect senses, perhaps-make of music an analyzable commodity. The trouble begins when we start to become so impressed by the strategies of ours systematized thought that we forget that it does relate to an obverse, that it is hewn from negation, that it is but a very small security against the void of negation which surrounds it.

Sometimes, it could be for other instruments. For example, on some of the music I have, the top staff would be for other (optional) instruments, such as flute, oboe, etc.

But then again, without seeing the music I couldn't say for sure.

Thanks for the responce. I will look at the sheet music again to see if is exactly the same throughout and post my answer soon. If it is for another instrument, instead of just an alternate way to play a specific part, it does not indicate what instrument to play it on. I guess that it would be left up to you, the player.

Okay. The Ossia part is written slightly different than what is written in the clef below. So, I am guessing that it is an alternate way to play the music.
