Why not just set up a daily time, say 9 p.m. eastern for people to sign in and chat?

Online discussions can be as entertaining as they are informative. It's all a matter of timing and participation. Nothing like a bare room to end a coversation, eh? As long as enough people are 'hip' to it in advance, a nice chat room can thrive.

It's actually good to use something like IRC where people might have trouble with the commands, because that way you weed out the idiots.
