Recommendations please on a very good (the best) book, series, or CD program that helps new piano players to learn and excel at music theory, ear training and sight-reading.

One program I heard of is the Rutgers University Music Dictaton/Ear Training CD package. Comments, suggestions. Thank you.

Hi Dan,

What age beginner are you talking about? You might choose different approaches depending on whether the student is a child or an adult. There are many good methods available ("the best" is subjective - you'll likely get a different answer from everyone you ask). Alfred's Basic Piano Library has LOTS of supplementary books within their method, including separate books for theory, ear training and sightreading (all orange covers, level 1A). They also publish a series for older beginners that has the same supplementary materials (Alfred's Complete, level 1 - silver). The same is true for their Adult method.

Bastien Piano Basics uses "Piano" (lesson), Performance, Technic, and Theory as the core of thier method. They have supplementary material for sightreading (A Line a Day Sightreading, Primer - Level 4), but I don't think they have ear training books in that series (their older series for the "Young Beginner" does, though).

Those are just two of MANY options available to you. You can also cross between different method books if you choose (just be careful to make sure they use a similar approach to teaching...different approaches can be confusing to the student). I'm sure others on the forum will be able to add more information.

Good luck!
