Liszt - 2nd Piano Concerto: need suggestions!

Hi,
I was wondering if people could suggest their absolute favorite recording(s) of Liszt's 2nd Piano Concerto.
If it is an artist who has released many different versions, perhaps you could specify the year or location.

Strongly second Richter!
If you can find it another possible version is by Valentin Georghiu.

Richter's Budapest recording with Janos Ferencsik is MUCH better than the Kondrashin ones.
You probably won't be able to find it though, it's long been out of print.

Great, great, great!
I have a friend who is a big Richter supporter so hopefully he'll have the Ferencsik recording. I was familiar with the Kondrashin recording and as PJ suggested it is a great recording. I'm eager to hear the Budapest recording.
Brendan, regarding Dichter's recording is it commerically available? Initial google searches couldn't locate it nor did Arkiv or Amazon.
Someone once told me that Pierre-Alain Volondat's 2nd Liszt Concerto recording live from the Queen Elizabeth competition is an 'interesting' one to listen to. I've only see a clip of the end, have any of you heard it ?

I love Richter's recording of the work, like everyone does, and also must recommend Cziffra as well. He tends to be disliked here, for reasons I don't understand (he's my favorite pianist, and I've heard plenty of them), but his playing in the 2nd Liszt concerto is hard to find fault with from any standpoint. One critic said, and I agree, that the two (the concerto and Cziffra) seem to be made for each other because of their rhapsodic and extemporaneous nature, almost mercurial and always exciting.
His commercial recording of the work is fabulous, but if you can find one of his live recordings, the playing is miraculous.

Didn't Cziffra debut with the A major concerto?
I'd love to get my hands on a recording.

The recording of Cziffra with conductor Cziffra Jr. is pretty good, although I much prefer Richter. Somehow, this recording of Cziffra doesn't seem to quite stand up to his usual brilliance, IMO. Otherwise, Cziffra is incredible, but this recording is kind of meh...

--- Hi Goldberg,
Cziffra is one of my favorite pianists aswell, I truly admire the man and love his recordings. Unfortunately, I haven't really taken to any of his concerto recordings. I purchased a number of different engagements with various composers--even under the wand of his own Son, Cziffra Jr.--but couldn't get into them.
As a side note, I often wonder what would have happened had Cziffra took an interest in recording some of Alkan's and / or Mozkowski's works ... oh ... only in my dreams!
--- IamCanadian,
A friend has the Richter CD so I'll be listening to it soon!

Hi Everyone,
After going through the recordings I found myself returning again and again to the Richter / Ferencsik interpretation--it is truly entertaining! So check it out if you can!
Thanks Iamcanadian for the suggestion, I'm so glad I found one that satisfied me completely.
--------- Max,
I'd LOVE to get Cziffra's debut playing the 2nd Liszt Concerto, do you know if it was recorded?
---- PJ,
I agree with you!
---- Thracozaag,
Woah that's an amazing fact! I had assumed that Cziffra had run into the works of Alkan but my dream was to listen to him play them! Katsaris is SUCH a champion, maybe we should write to him and urge that he release a recording on some Alkan Works (Cziffra Edition).
hahahhahahah

Max, where did you hear that he debuted with the A major concerto? And, what do you mean "debut" exactly?
You might be right, of course--I'm an enormous fan of Cziffra, as most people who know me are aware, but I'm not even close to being a great authority on him. Still, I haven't heard that yet about the Liszt concerto. I wouldn't expect you to make such a mistake, but for what it's worth you might be thinking of the 2nd Bartok concerto, which I *think* he actually "debuted" (that is, he made the first concert performance of it--could be wrong), and it was his most important performance prior to his international career.
However, since I don't think you could have confused the two, maybe what you mean is that once he escaped from Hungary, his first performance internationally was of the 2nd Liszt concerto? That might be the case...it's interesting, and also that he played Alkan, which I've heard before. And, speaking of concerti and unheard of Cziffra performances, maybe Koji can also refresh my memory on a performance I remember reading about involving Cziffra, Mozart, and Argentina. I think it was his only time playing Mozart in a performance (a piano concerto), and the conductor angered him so much that Cziffra called him a "fat, insolent pig" or something of the sort, before vowing never to play in the country again.
I don't know whether or not that's how the story goes, but it's still pretty entertaining.

Hi Goldberg,
Cziffra is amazing! I know many of his recordings are probably big favorites of yours, but are there any that stick out? For example I really love his Mephisto Waltz, Orage, Mendelssohn's Rondo Capriccio, CPE Bach's Rondo Expressivio, Chopin's 2nd Scherzo, Chopin's Op.10 no.4, hahaha I guess they're too many to name!
Regarding Cziffra playing a Mozart Concerto, on the DVD 'The Art of Piano' Gyorgy Sandor makes some reference to hearing Cziffra play one of the Mozart Concerti live. I believe he gave a location but I can't recall.

[/b] You're right, I'm wrong I was thinking of something from Cannons & Flowers but I haven't read it for a long time, and I totally misremembered the passage! I swear someone told me that there is a recording from the same year that he left Hungary (1956 is it?) but I'm not entirely sure if it is his first performance after he left.

Yeah, I love that book. I hadn't realised you've read it!
Anyway, if that's what you were thinking about, it certainly was the Bartok 2nd he played, and there is a recording (commercially available, I think) of him playing it in '56, right before the Hungarian Revolution, I believe. The way he tells the story, there was a mounting sense of patriotism in Budapest that had started, for the most part, after WWII ended, and Hungary had been almost entirely closed off from the rest of Europe (and Cziffra couldn't escape to start a proper career). Then at the climax of this patriotism, Cziffra was invited to play the Bartok concerto to an extremely packed-out hall, and the pure sense of Hungarian nationalism in the moment aggravated the spirit of the audience so much that in the next few days, they started mass rioting in the streets. The police were unable to cope, and during that time, the road blocks on the Hungarian border fell apart and Cziffra gathered his family and left everything he'd ever known behind.
In that context, the recording is even more exciting than it is otherwise!
However, I will say that after you mentioned it, it seems like I also read somewhere that in one of his first international concerts, he did actually play the Liszt 2nd concerto...if so, I've never heard of a recording of it though.

I have the Bartok 2 recording, it's coupled with (IIRC) a Liszt operatic transcription and the Liszt Hungarian Fantasie. Shame the sound quality is fairly shocking, heh.

Hey Varcon,
I had a disc of Casadesus playing Scarlatti that I really enjoyed. Regarding the Liszt Concerto, I shall look for it and maybe some other recordings of his aswell--any recommendations ?
