This custom search works much better than the built in one and allows searching older posts.

That is the most awesome piano music I've heard in a long time!
Listening to the "Window In Time" Rachmaninof CD of him playing his own works and the performances are breathtaking, but that Elégie composition is so beautiful & drenched in sorrow that I'm left here, speechless!
Highly recommended! Again... WOW! Get... that... CD!

Elegie is one of my favorite pieces to play. I get swept away in its highs and lows. Gorgeous, as well as challenging, piece of music.

I started to work on this one about a month ago. This really beautiful music, but really quite difficult trying to keep the left hand quiet and flowing. As I work on it more and more, I'm beginning to see some of the dialog happening between the different voices particlarly in the middle section.
The drama, and heart-felt emotions in the middle section are absolutely spectacular.

Aha! As mentioned in this thread I started working on this last weekend, having been tempted by a B&H Rachmaninoff album in our local sheet-music emporium. I can't stop playing that bit, you know... Eb minor descending bass line, ostensibly leading towards the subdominant (Ab minor), but then interrupted by that glorious A major lydian episode.... As an aside I am finding that 5-5 at the beginning of most of the LH octave accompaniment figures works best for me. Hmm, perhaps I'll get the Zoom out later in the week... -Michael B.

The e-flat minor to the a-flat makes this so wonderful - almost like one of his piano concertos. I use the same fingering, 5-5, but I've had other issues, which destroy the rolling bass line. It's that little bit of hesitation when moving the hand/arm/wrist unit that gets in the way. :rolleyes: I'll get it eventually because I have to!  John John

The great thing about S.R. are those incredible melodies and this piece is one fine example and written when he was a young man. Also try the 3rd moment musical, another beauty.

Also the 5th Moment Musicaux in Db. It has a haunting melody but seems seldom mentioned on this board.

I'm another big fan of the Eb minor Elegy. Also originally heard it from the Ampico piano rolls that are also the source of the "Window in Time" CD, if memory serves. And I'll also say this: I certainly prefer it to the the following piece in the same opus!

I certainly prefer it to the the following piece in the same opus!
Maybe alot more people would too but they are far more likely to hear the following piece.

Thanks to Strat for creating this thread and to fathertopianist for the youtube link, I wasn't familiar with this piece and it is indeed totally beautiful !
