Is this a good audition program for an undergrade planning on majoring in piano performance.

Bach-WTC Book I No. 3
Beethoven- Appassionata
Liszt/Paganini- Etude No. 2
Chopin- Fourth Ballade or Andante Spianato et Grand Polonaise Brilliant
Stravinsky- Three Movements from Petrouchka

I have about half the program under my belt for next spring, and hope to have the rest by the end of summer. I just can't decide if I am over doing it.

That's a great program, if you can play it well.

You are only overdoing it if you aren't going to play them all well. The most important thing for the audition is not to impress the judges with the pieces that you play, so much as it is to impress the judges with how well you play the pieces that you play.

Depends on the school. It's a good program if you've done a lot of repertoire, play your current rep well, and are looking for a large university of conservatory.

I'm planning on only only applying to conservatories, but I am also auditioning to some saftey schools in the midwest. My first choice is Oberlin Conservatory though. Does anyone have info for any conservatories in or near Kansas City that may give out large scholarships?

There's UMKC and KU, both which have great faculty and some money to play with. The piano department here at UMKC just got extra funding from the state specifically to support piano students/make scholarship offers comparable to other conservatories.

Oberlin can be stingy for first-year students. The ****-end of the stick is that a lot of conservatories don't want to risk money on first-year students because of the high turnover rate, so scholarship usually increases as you complete the degree program. This means that in the case of Oberlin, CIM, CCM, USC, UCLA, Peabody, etc. you're usually going to have to come up with $20k+ for the first one to two years of study.

Your program is fine. Just remember that quality > quantity in auditions.

How old are you? Is Undergrad in US same age as UK (18)?

If so, I'm not feeling too good about my auditions in November >_>

Heh :p

Since we're on the topic of audition programs...

Could someone care to give some thoughts about mine yet I am not sure about it 100% but I want to plan ahead so

Bach- Haven't picked out a Prelude and Fugue yet, any suggestions?

Beethoven- Right now I am finishing up the 3rd movement of the Moonlight, would that be an ok Sonata to use?

Grieg- Ballade, still have to learn this and thinking its less commonly used than the Chopin Ballades

Debussy- Pour Le Piano Suite- Still have to learn Toccata but the Prelude and Sarabande are almost done.

Any suggestions? The Debussy was completed in 1901 so it can be used as 20th century, or so I would think \:\) .

Audition pieces really depends on the school, what their specific requirements are, if you are tinking about auditioning, the safe way is to contact the school you are interested in and find out what they want exactly.

Usually they will want to have 3-4 pieces in different era, in contrasting style.

Your Grieg and Debussy maybe running into the same musical period, maybe it's safter to pick a more 20th century piece after 1900.

I have an audition tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday) for a scholarship (one student gets $1100 to go to Europe for a week, school recognition, and a performance at a district function).

Shostakovich: Prelude in C Major, Op. 34 No. 1
J.S. Bach: Fugue in C Minor, WTC I
Chopin: Waltz in A Minor, Op. 34 No. 2
Chopin: Etude in C Minor, Op. 10 No. 12

+ 10 minute interview.

(And I'm accompanying the 3rd movement of the Weber Clarinet Concerto No. 2 for a friend of mine.)

This is my fifth audition this year - excluding a couple competitions - and technically, I'm supposed to audition for a concerto concert as well sometime this week (but over the past couple decades only a handful of students didn't get to play at the concert, because they weren't well prepared).

Plus, two more recitals in May and June.

Ah, 'tis the season for auditions, I suppose. I wish that it would never end, but I'll be very happen when it finally does, if you know what I mean. ;\)
