I've been wondering lately...if you lived near a great pianist, say someone you really admired, would you ever make an attempt to contact them? (legally that is :p )

I personally live fairly close to Van Cliburn in Ft.Worth and have seen him a few times at a couple of different places. I have to admit that I'm more of a fan of other pianists, such as Perahia, Moravec, and Kissin. But nevertheless I have great respect for him and would love to talk to him. I think that if he moved or passed away (hopefully no time soon), I would really be disappointed that I probably had as good of a chance as you can get in meeting someone other than in a greenroom.

I know there's quite a few members from NY, and I was wondering if they lived near any pianists, especially since NY seems to be the only city they live in in America.

I just got done reading the "Evenings with Horowitz" book, and it mentioned many times the author and the Horowitzes going to dinner together at various places in NY. I thought to myself, "man, do you know how great it would have been to be eating at a restaurant and see Vladimir Horowitz walk in?".

Ok I better stop before I blabber anymore. But I would just like to know from the members if they live near any famous pianists and what, if anything, would you do if you were a neighbor of one?

Send an email. If he's interested he'll respond. If he is not email-literate, chances are he's not up for communicating. I suppose a hand-written note could substitute. My kids email celebrities and you'd be surprised how many respond and keep up regular correspondence. Even to the point of remembering discussions when the occasion to meet personally comes along. It can't hurt to try!

Hi Jeffylube!
I live about 40 miles away from Ms. Blanca Uribe! She is my teacher and plays all over the world!! In my opinion, she is excellent!!!!! \:\) \:\) \:\)
There are many other pianists that perform around here. But the only other one that is close to me in distance is Mr. Vladimir Feltsman!!!!! \:\) He plays at SUNY in New Paltz, NY.
I ran into Leon Botstein a few times at concerts and he is a conductor. Mr. George Tsontakis actually was at one of my concerts!

If i were you the next time i saw him i would go right up to him and introduce myself and tell him how much i admire his work,he would probably very cordial, let's face it, he's not a rock star so the average joe would'nt know him if he tripped over him,but i think everyone needs some recognition,go for it you might make his day or make a new friend.

I'm with Daryl-- at an appropriate time, go up and introduce yourself as an admirer, etc. It can't hurt, and you may be able to strike up a conversation that could lead to a friendship.

We have two "famous" professional sports players on our block, a football player and a baseball player. We were all paranoid and trying to honor their need for privacy, but when we had our annual block party both came with their families, were quite delightful, VERY accommodating to the kids in the crowd who wanted autographs, etc. Since the ice has been broken, they've turned into "regular guys," chatting with people over broken lawn mowers, etc.

I'll bet professional piano players are the same way, once you are on a personal level.

Good luck!
Nina

I have a great pianist right in my house -- she's my daughter.

but she's only 11. Still I'd rather hear her live than Kissin's recording made when he was 12.

Love that live music! \:D

I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan which I think has an incredible number of world class musicians. But I can't name any specific ones. Can anyone help??

I think Evgeny Kissin actually lives or lived in NYC, (along with London and Paris I think). Murray Perahia was born in NYC, and of course Horowitz used to live here also. I have never met any famous pianist in the flesh while walking around in NYC, unless you count of course backstage at some venue!

From the Cliburn competition videos that I've seen, he seems like he's the coolest guy. If I were you, I'd totally approach him. When you think about it, great pianists are only famous in our eyes so it's not like we'd be approaching some major celebrity with an attitude. All I'm saying is that they don't get as much attention as you think so they probably wouldn't mind a fan. I'm willing to bet 1 in maybe 50 New Yorkers would actually recognize Horowitz if he were walking down the street--maybe less.

Anyway, to answer your question, I live in Orange County, CA and pretty close to LA so I'm sure I live next to some famous pianists. I just don't know who.

Mike

I live about a mile or so away from George Firoe, my piano teacher who puts on several solo piano concerts around town (mostly Chopin. He is a part of the Chopin Society) and also conducts the chior for the Seattle Symphony.

My very first teacher was Nancy Weems, she is now head of the keyboard department at the University of Houston. She's been nominated for a Grammy and has won the International Bach Competition. However, I only had her for a year or so, I wish I had her as a teacher now (it makes a great deal of a difference having a great teacher teaching you more advanced material rather having a great teacher teach you what middle C is). Oh well! ;\)
