Just for fun, does anyone want to throw a few more into the tiers? Where would these fall: Rach Rhapsody, Grieg, Saint-Saens 4 and 5?

Grieg: tier 4.

Rach rhapsodie would probably fall into either 3 or 4.

Yikes, I'm working on the Saint-Saens 2nd (3rd mvmt for a competition later) and it can be a b**** to get up to presto. The left hand figurations move around quite a bit and there's a good bit of jumping.

How come nobody ever rates or suggests the Bach concertos? Why isn't the Schoenberg ever put among the difficult, or the Strauss Burleske? What has happened to Stravinsky's Concerto and Capriccio?

I would put Saint-Saens 4 and 5 above Saint-Saens 2. The second movement of the 4th is very hard. All of the 5th is hard (more musically than techincally, but still technically more difficult than 2). I think I would put Saint-Saens Africa up there too.

Tier 1

Alkan
Bartok 2
Busoni
Corigliano
Lutoslawski
Prokofiev 5

Tier 2

Barber
Brahms 2
Prokofiev 2
Rachmaninov 3
Tchaikovsy 2

Tier 3

Beethoven 4,5
Brahms 1
Chopin 1,2
Dvorak
Liszt 2
Prokofiev 1,3
Rachmaninov 1,2
Tchaikovsky 1

Tier 4

Bartok 3
Beethoven 3
Liszt 1
Mozart Kk. 271, 450, 451
Schumann
Saint-Saens 2

Tier 5

Beethoven 1,2
Mendelssohn 1,2
mostMozart between Kk. 453 and 595

Tier 6

Haydn
most most Mozart upto K. 449
Where would one find Bartok 1 on this ranking?

(I'm listening to Zimerman's recording now... thumb )

Hmm, I wonder where Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue would go...!

And the Bach Italian Concertos would probably go in the latter tiers. They aren't too difficult at all.
