I am a huge Rachmaninoff fan, and my newest piece is his 2nd Concerto. I do fine through most of the 1st and the intire second movement,,, but my hardest problem is the very first few phrases... where the left hand has a chord with a 10th in it, and the right hand has up to 5 note chords. I have very small hands, and was wondering if anyone has some advice for me.. thanks

There are three ways of dealing with this: Arpeggiate the chords, play part of the chords as grace notes, or leave notes out.

Personally, I think the arpeggiation is the way to go, even though I can, with some effort, play all the full chords. It sounds much nicer, and plays in well with my *own* personal interpretation (ie, the first movement being very much like a thunderstorm). Listen to Ashkenazy's recording and see what you think. Playing block chords, to me, makes it sound overly simple, and the "grace note" chords are just a little bit..."off" in feeling. I dunno.
But, it's not my choice, just giving you a few things to think about perhaps. I wouldn't recommend leaving out notes, though that IS an option..
