Since I am a bit anal about dust, I would like to clean the harp and soundboard by dusting it daily. What is a good product to use for dusting INSIDE of a grand piano?

I read about Original CA Duster, but I believe it is for OUTSIDE the piano only, right?

And yes, I am working on a string cover. My first experiment failed as I bough a wool fabric that "drapes" too well (and touches the strings as well), I am waiting for samples from NJ to make a proper one.

For the inside of pianos that I maintain I ask the client to let me clean it. As you like to dust daily you should ask your tech to show you how.
I use microfiber cloth for the soundboard and removing dust from the plate and damper blocks. Nylon bristle brush and vacuum to remove stuff from felts and the tuning pin area.
You should try just blowing dust out from the insides with the opposite vacuum end more frequently than wiping.
I would not use the CA Duster to remove dust from the outside finish.
Check http://www.ptg.org/resources-pianoOwners-finishCare.php
for tips on finish care.
Why not order a proper string cover from someone who makes them professionally - Dan Dannenfelser in Sacramento does a very nice job and reasonable prices.

Hi RoseMe,

With the string cover on - if you leave it on 99.99% of the time,... then I think daily dusting inside the grand piano will not be necessary.

Cleaning inside the piano is pretty tricky,... so I think it would be best to leave this to the pro \:\)

After I made my string cover,... I had my tech clean the inside of my piano,... if I remember correctly I paid about $50,...

The string cover keeps dust away quite well so I really don't plan to have my tech clean the inside of my piano more than once a year,...

The CA Car Duster works well to dust the outside of th piano,... Damp microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints for me (although another member - MHAADriver - recommends chamois instead of microfiber),...

Regards,

Robert

Cleaning inside is a bit tricky but nothing that some owners can't handle with a little coaching. Some will gladly take on the task and others will not.
I just would like to point out that anything that wipes dust is probably making very small scratches in the finish with the abrasive dust.
As for the CA Duster I have not used it so there is no experience - I should change my statement to "I do not recomend what I have not used" if it removes dust then maybe it would be reasonable to use - dust must be removed. Damp Microfiber or damp cotton fabric will do it. If fingerprints remain a small amt of added detergent should persuade it.

Thanks Gene and Robert.
It is so sad that I picked a wool fabric that's too light to serve as sting cover. It drapes beautifully at the wrong places - on the strings! \:\)

When I get back home next week I will give it another try!

Hi RoseMe,...

That's too bad,.. if you really love the fabric and can't find an alternative that you like then I think you can still use that fabric,... but you'll have to either build a more extensive set of dowel frames or,... use Kenny's fishing line technique to prevent the fabric from touching the strings,...

Regards,

Robert

One of the joys of living in the Australian "outback" is dust. And lots of it particularly when there's cattle in the nearby yards and the winds from the east.
The best way to get dust out of a piano is not to dust, but rather blow it out with a compressor, or if you don't have access to one of those reverse the cycle on your vacumn cleaner so it blows rather than sucking.
regards John
