I just got a new piano and want to know who to take care of it:
1) We have hardwood floor. Do we need to put carpet or soft cursion underneath the piano? 2) I heart that we need to put some Moth ball inside the piano to prevent insect. Is that true? 3) Do I need Humidifier or Dehumidifier? 4) Are their any special care that we need to keep the piano in good condition
Thanks in advance

#1 - Re the hardwood floor, it totally depends on how bright the piano sounds in its new space. If its too bright for the room or if there's too much reverberation, a rug is the first thing I'd try. (in fact, I just got a rug for under my new piano a month ago)
#2 - haven't heard of this. maybe in some areas its necessary. you should post a question on this in the 'piano forum'
#3 - i would recommend a 'Dampp-Chaser' humidifier/dehumidifier system. It involves having a tech install a small humidifier/dehuidifier under your piano (assuning its a grand) which keeps the humidity within a specified range (~42%). THis will help tuning stability and increase the life of your piano (specifically by reducing the probablity that your soundboard develops cracks). To learn more do a search on that 'Dampp-Chaser' in the Piano Forum.
#4 - see #3, also, you might want to keep your piano closed when you're not using it.

But beware, if you keep a humidifier on the piano all the time and you perhaps go on a trip, you could have a disaster. I know a college that had this happen during summer break. The humidifier ran out of water and was blowing warm air onto the soundboard. (the air that usually heats the water) The janitors cleaning did not turn the humidifier off, so when the professor came back, his soundboard had cracked. If you get one, pay cloase atention to it, for the piano's sake

Seth, that's good advice, but the current Dampp-Chaser systems for pianos have a "smart heater bar" that turns off when the water runs out. They are completely safe to leave unattended. For more info: http://www.dampp-chaser.com --Cy-- Dampp-Chaser Installer

I had one installed on my new piano, and it has helped keep the instrument stable through the seasonal changes. John

Thanks for the info and happy new year! :-). Mine is an upright, so I am planning to put an area rug underneath the piano to protect both the piano and the floor. However, I don't know how much it will affect be on the sound of the piano. I am hoping not much....

[/b] A rug under your upright shouldn't affect the sound too much because the sound of an upright comes out the front. John
