I'm currently 16, have never played a concerto, and I'm planning to play Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto 1 as my 1ST CONCERTO.

I have'nt really found my technical limitations YET, so I keep on taking big steps to find my technical limitation. My reperoire is in my signature.

Some more info about me: I started playing when I was 5, I stopped when I was 10 @ 1st lessons in Bach. I restarted when I was 15 @ Bach 2 part inventions, and 1 year later, I'm playing pieces I never dared to dream before.

I'd call it ambitious, not crazy. Test the waters by working on what you imagine to be the most difficult sections first, and you should know whether you're over your head before investing too much time and effort on it.

I took a big leap of faith with my own current project, something reputed to very difficult with some awkward writing and gratuitous virtuosic displays, and I'm finding it well worth the effort. I'm not sure if I'm more skilled than I realized or if the piece is less demanding than it's generally considered, but either circumstance would be a welcome surprise.

If you need (or want) to learn a concerto and that one is your favorite, give it a try.

Assuming you're studying with a teacher, what does he or she say about your idea?

Steven

Start with the cadenza. If you can handle that, you're probably okay with the rest of the piece, provided you can handle the odd rhythm of the main theme. (And I don't mean the theme of the introduction, I mean the 1st theme of the sonata structure.)

"If we continually try to force a child to do what he is afraid to do, he will become more timid, and will use his brains and energy, not to explore the unknown, but to find ways to avoid the pressures we put on him." (John Holt)

In my thinking, this "leap of faith" is the ONLY way. Congratulations (in advance) and cheers to you for your courage!
