Should have heard of him a long time ago... but

Stanislav Bunin!

I'm growing fond of his Chopin recordings.

He is an exceptional talent, I think. Or should that be "was"? Googling doesn't turn up any recent info on him. Too bad Stage6 just shut down; they had a very fine Rach Con 2 of his online.

Such wonderful playing really.
His Chopin sounds so fresh... not the heavily crafted (albeit wonderful) interpretations of today's Chopin Competition laureates...
And such gorgeous techique, too.
What ever happened to Bunin?

I think his Minute Waltz rendition has far too much rubato(seemingless endless tempo changes for reasons that do not appear valid to me).

He was the winner of 1985 Warsaw Chopin Competition. He is very well-received in Germany and Japan. As a result he established homes in both countries. He enjoys a ‘rock star’ status in Japan. He is still actively concertising in Japan and Far-East areas. His name seldom shows up here in North America. His one commercial DVD, however, is widely available for quite a while: Bunin Plays Chopin and Debussy. I also have about 5 of his CDs. His early playing was better, more focused and naturally flowing to my ears. I recently found his Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2 in high resolution on one of the video sites. When I tried to download I found that it was pulled, no longer existent. I hope I can find it again in the future. Just wonder anyone here knows about this video recording?

Did his earlier playing have less tempo changes? I just listened to his 2 pieces from Kinderscenen and Turkish March and found the same problem(for my tastes) as with the Chopin Waltz.

Three discs of his music (plus single pieces on compilations) available on arkivmusic here:

Arkivmusic listings for Bunin.

There's one Mozart recording (concerto #23, A) listed at jpc:
