Just got the CD yesterday, and I've listened to the third movement at least 5 or 6 times already...

(listening to the 1st movement now)

I love the first movement beyond words. I listened to my recording of it so much that I made a groove in it from over listening.

Who's the pianist on yours?

André Previn.

On the same CD is the Rhapsody in Blue and American in Paris. Previn is also the conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.

The music is just so beautiful. I love particularly the orchestration (especially in the Rhapsody) - really interesting and different. Of course, the melodies and the rhythms are just incredible!

The Concerto in F is versatile too. The local High School marching band used it in the half-time show last year.

A few months ago I bough the Leonard Slatkin St. Louis Orchestra double CD of Gershwin music. The reason I got it was Rhapsody in Blue and I was surprised to hear them playing the half-time show.

Yeah, I looked and I have the Andre Previn recording too. We probably have the same one.

Their are many beautiful moments in that concerto. I have a recording of Andre Previn with the Pittsburgh Symphony. Of course it has the famous trumpet solo in the 2nd movement but later in that movement, the piano has a cadenza. After that cadenza the strings have the most beautiful singing line in the whole piece in my opinion. All of it is great!

Ack. I misread. My error. I got through the George Gershwin recording on the Panorama series. It also has the 2nd Rhapsody and Variations on I got Rhythm. Both are very good, although I am not sure if Gershwin orchestrated the 2nd Rhapsody.

Oh, that's funny. I just checked Amazon.

Previn has 1 CD with the Pittsburgh Symphony, including the Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F, and American in Paris.

Listen to the "I Got Rhythm" Variations, it's a really cool set.

Loads of fun to play!!! I prefer his Concerto in F to Rhaspsody in Blue because the Concerto has more variety in character and the orchestra and piano seem to be better balanced. At times the orchestra can be overwheliming in the Rhapsody. But nevertheless, both are great fun to play and listen to.
