My wife dropped a pencil behind the fallboard and it landed somewhere on the keybed inside the piano out of reach. Seems like there might be a possibility of it getting caught in the action and mess something up. Is it ok to keep playing until the piano tech comes to tune the piano in a couple weeks? Should I dismantle the piano so I can slide the keybed out to retrieve it? I saw this done when they delivered the piano. The movers had to dismantlle the piano to bring it up a flight of stairs. It looked like a fairly simple procedure. Any suggestions?

Is it a grand or upright(sounds like a grand)? What brand?

You won't hurt the piano by leaving a pencil in there. Getting it out shouldn't be a big deal, either. I doubt if you'll have to take the action out.

Look on the lower corners of the fallboard. You'll see some small brass pieces near the end blocks, either with screws or without. If there are screws, carefully unscrew them. Then you can probably lift the fallboard out.

With keyboard open, lift up on the lip that closes over the front of the keys. Put your fingers under the lip and lift it straight up. IT should come right out.

If it's a Mason and Hamlin or Steinway and possibly other brands, wait for a tech; it's a little more complicated.

Terminology side note: the keybed is the bottom of the piano that the action and keys rest on. In a grand, the action and keys are attached to the keyframe, which rests on the keybed.

Thanks David! It is a new Kohler and Campbell 5'4" grand. I saw them take the fallboard off when they delivered the piano last week. It looked like it came off very easy. This is my first piano and I am just learning the terminology thanks for the info...the pencil must be resting on the action. I'll take care of it in the morning.

If the fallboard doesn't have any scews [mostly those with slow closing fallboards...] - it lifts usually quite simply by pulling gently up on both sides where it is anchored.

After having lifted the fallboard gently up on the sides, it's not hard to manouvre it out from the frame exposing the action - that's where you most likely will find your pen!

If any of the above seems too odd to you, just wait for your tuner to come - he'll do this for you in a snap!

Meantime keep playing: you won't do any harm to the piano!

Thanks Dave and Norbert! It is a slowfall fallboard, it does have one containment screw, it did lift right out, the pencil was laying on the action, the errant pencil is in hand...not a problem!

Tootall,

Good work. And you've just developed a skill you're almost certain to need again in the future!
