Is he a good interpreter of Chopin's etudes?
I'm thinking of getting a cd of him...

I like that CD very much. I would also recommend Pollini's recording of the etudes

Perahia's recording of the Bach english suites and keyboard concertos are also not to be missed.

Perahia's recording of the Chopin Etudes has been very favorably received by all the critics that I have read. It's one of the best that I have heard.

Regards,

I have that disc (I assume you mean the one with the peachy coloured cover) sitting on my computer desk right now and it is quite enjoyable. His interpretation is really good, and he has a superbe touch. I would recommend it alot. i had taken out another recording by a fellow that I had never heard before a while ago and it was absolutely terrible. I hope you enjoy.

I bought this CD just a few days ago and am listening to it right now. I've bought quite a few of his recordings recently (Bach and Schubert)and I find them all first rate and very intelligent.

I would definetly reccomend you get the Perahia recording if you dont have the chopin etudes already. From what I've heard, his playing is unpredictable (in a good way \:\) ) and flexible. I believe this recording won a grammy. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes he would probably be my first choice.

His recording of the Chopin Etudes is marvellous. He is so consistent, yet plays all the pieces with life and energy, and brings out all the beauty and melody within without ever getting messy.

I'd also recommend Earl Wild's recording of the Chopin Etudes. Incredible! Also a very nice piano sound (Baldwin SD-10).

I wouldn't call Perahia's chopin etudes unpredictable. That "honour" goes to Cziffra. In fact i'd recommend the Cziffra set (if simply for shock value) over Perahia.

I have Gavrilov, Perahia, Magaloff, and Pollini playing Chopin's etudes. I find the Perahia one to be by far the best. The Pollini comes in second, IMHO. When Perahia plays the etudes, they sound so EASY - not just virtuostic show-pieces, but actual songs.

I love the Perahia recording. Not sure if I would call it - or any other recording - the "best."
Of all the recordings I have - or have heard - Perahia, Pollini, Browning, etc., there are one or more etudes that each one really "nails." In Perahia's case, I would say Op10#1,4 and 7.
