Ivan Moravec is, without question, the best living interpretor. His mentor, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, is also superb. I would recommend anything available by either of these artists.

I think this is far too strong a statement. I don't think there is any composer, including Debussy, that has "without question" a greatest living interpreter.

You are right. The two pianists I recommended are merely the best in my opinion, and not anyone else's.

Annihil8tor, I recommend you explore Moravec here: Debussy by Moravec samples and reviews

and Michelangeli here: Debussy by Michelangeli samples and reviews

and form your own opinions.

Another excellent Debussy pianist is Kocsis, for almost all of Debussy's pieces; and Uchida for the etudes. The Uchida etudes are among the best piano recordings, I've read.

I would say Gieseking ranks up there, but you'll have to look past antiquated sonics to get hear his best Debussy (recorded before WWII). There is also a fine 4CD set of his Debussy on EMI from the 1950s, but not quite on the same level as the earlier recordings.

Michelangeli recorded some riveting Preludes. His approach is poles apart from Gieseking's but equally interesting.

Pollini has recorded a fine set of Etudes, as has the late Paul Jacobs.

The composers want performers be imaginative, in the direction of their thinking--not just robots, who execute orders.
