7:00 TONIGHT (Thursday) I'll be ready to walk on stage for my FIRST concerto performance with a real orchestra (as opposed to a 2nd piano trying vainly to sound like an orchestra).

[Linked Image]

I'm playing the 1st movement of the Grieg Concerto.

[Linked Image]

Here's the whole program, by the way - it's terrific:

Grieg - Piano Concerto - 1st Movement
Telemann - Oboe Concerto - 2nd and 3rd Movements
Saint-Saens - Cello Concerto No. 1 - 1st Movement
Menotti - "The Black Swan" (from The Medium)
Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole - 5th Movement

*intermission*

Weber - Clarinet Concertino
Weber - Clarinet Concerto No. 2 - 3rd Movement
Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 23 - 2nd Movement
Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto - 1st Movement
Donizetti - "Una furtiva lagrima" (from L'elixer d'amour)
Mozart - Horn Concerto No. 3 - 1st Movement

Oooooh! Break a leg. Break TWO legs. Break every bone in your body. This is wonderful. And to think that you will be playing music from my country. I am sure it will be a grand success. And the audience will surely shed a few furtiva lagrimas because you play it so beautifully.

Yeah my brother just performed the Greig 1st mvt w/ our school orchestra, along with 5 other concerto mvmts w/ other soloists(including another pianist playing the same movement of the Greig! Very interesting....).

Just have fun and don't worry. Good luck!

Is this an annual concerto concert that your school holds? That's one of the best things about my school's music program (besides the chamber choir), we have annual concerto concert so I have the oppurtunity to play with an orchestra.

Bastard. My high school ORCHESTRA was so terrible they couldn't perform Handel's Hallelujah (let's not discuss the chorus). So, no concerto with them. My band teacher wanted to play Rhapsody in Blue, but the band couldn't handle the band arrangement (clarinet couldn't gliss, trumpets couldn't play a single right note, because I was normally principle trumpet, etc.), so no go there. We eventually settled on the third movement of Beethoven's 2nd concerto, which she also cut a few minutes out of, because it was too lengthy.

So, I played one cut movement with a paltry band arrangement (terribly played, the main theme and the dialogue between the piano and orchestra was virtually non-existant).

To reiterate, you bastard!

Those Webers are terrific concertos. He wrote many operas, so his lyrical sections are magnificent, and he's an amazing orchestrator. I'm more fond of the first concerto than the second, personally, and the concertino is so cool.

The Grieg is one of my favorite. I envy you.

AHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck, and it's great that you're finally playing with an orchestra - you really deserve it.

(My HS could not even conceive of having anything like "concerto night" heh.)

Have fun! I played the first movement of the Rach 2 with an 'orchestra' (the instrumentation had to be smaller hmph) recently, not in a proper recital though people did listen. It was fun (but demanding)

WOAH.

smile

Well, there's no such thing as a perfect performance.

I started a phrase wrong towards the beginning (right after the first piu lento) and just sat for a page and a half. The orchestra conductor turned around to show me the score, but as soon as he turned I went right on with the next passage. wink

And... I stuttered on my last thirds run.

Needless to say... I got a standing ovation during the final chord.

Afterwards, one of the cellists' mother introduced herself. She was bauling during my performance, and was the first to stand (people around her were asking her if she was my mother - she was so proud! I had never even met her before...) She got a picture of me with her daughter, because I'll "be famous some day" (so she claims)... smile

It was fantastic. My cadenza was awesome (though not flawless, of course... wink ), and the rest of the concert was terrific, especially the Lalo and the Mendelssohn and the Saint-Saens (I'm partial to string instruments...)

I'll post the recording when I get it (next week, I think).

So, pianojerome, when do we get all the gory details? How WAS it, man?

I'm really really really curious on what you have to say for yourself. What did the critics say afterwards?

I can go on forever....

I think it went very well. I did have that one huge slip-up, but a good friend of mine, who is a music major, said she didn't even notice. A few people did comment on it to me, but they were congratulating me on a wonderful recovery! After that slip-up, though, I thought to myself, "OK. I've had my mistake. Now I can play perfectly." ... and I played wonderfully after that.

Surprisingly, I wasn't so nervous. I wasn't nervous that day or right before I walked out. Well, perhaps I was a tad nervous - but not as I usually am before even minor performances. Confidence certainly is one of the most important features of a good performer. I knew the music well, I knew the notes well, I had practiced a great deal, and I knew that I would play well. Especially when I had that big slip - some people would break down or play miserably afterwards, but you can't let that happen. You just dismiss it as an inevitable glitch, and you go on with confidence and pride, knowing that you have practiced and prepared and are ready to go on with a great performance.

Sorry Sam, I seem to have slipped the first post somewhere - sorry for the trouble to quote it to me again - but thanx!

It's a great thing that you weren't nervous. Usually, I'm nervous for not being nervous, because I'm scared that I'm neverminded and won't care if I made mistakes...

Congrats! Now you can bask in your new-found "fame"!

We performed at a local church that had a 9' Steinway. It was tuned the afternoon of the performance! thumb
