Which publisher do you recommend for Chopin? Especially for the Nocturnes.

The best editions for usually any piece are the staples: Henle, Urtext, Paderwaski. Pricewise, I would go the the Schirmer or Dover.

Like everything else in life, the more expensive it is, the better it usually is. The Henle, while being more expensive than Dover or Schirmer, is ions better in quality and it is urtext, most important of all.

The Frederick Chopin Institute edition (Paderewski, Bronarski, and Turczynski) is very scholarly and I have always found it most satisfactory. Before Henley it was considered the benchmark by many.

I like the Edition Peters version of Chopin Nocturnes (I have a copy). The music is more spread out and legible compared to Schirmer edition.

I have both the Peters and the Henle - among others - of the Chopin Noctures, and I find the Henle even easier to read than the Peters. There are certain pages of the Peters where the music is much more "condensed" than in the Henle.

Does anyone have experience with the Alfred Editions, edited by Palmer?

I am finding it useful for separate editions of Chopin Preludes and Waltzes, especially when marking up the pieces. They seem well thought out.

I have about a month's experience with that edition. The layout seems decent, though I've hardly played through all the pieces to see for sure. I have a few other Alfred Editions, and the binding has withstood my page turning.

My eyes prefer the page color of the Henle editions, though my wallet does not.

I vote Paderewski. My son's Cortot-taught, Russian teacher disses it for some of the embellishments, etc., but I think it it's wonderful - from one Pole to another.
