Frank,

Can we try images in the signature for a little bit and see if anyone likes it?

Brendan,

That's fine with me, just please keep them fairly small (eats up bandwith).
I have one in mine \:\)

Do we really need to see pictures of Franz Liszt each time you post?

I think my last post was a little abrupt; I hope it did not come across as rude.
If we were voting on this question, I would vote against members posting pictures of their favorite-composer(or artists)-of-the-moment. On the other hand, I enjoy this forum so much that I would gladly go along with the idea if it does not become excessive.
Regards,

That's okay...none taken. Of course, if one person posts a pic of their hero that means everyone else has the right to do the same, or a pic of their favorite piano. I wasn't trying to antagonize anyone with it...hehehe. Like I said at the beginning - let's try it and see if people like doing it.

I think it would be allright. As long as the pictures aren't bigger than the one Brendan experimented with (nice picture by the way \:D )

Now I have to go hunting for a pic of PDQ Bach...

that might be grounds for being ostracized, so I guess I'll skip the signature.

Uhm, seems BruceD is right on this one.
Not that I've got anything against Elton John.. it's just..

Still I think if the pictures were a bit smaller it could be a fun way to color the forum a bit. Atleast don't use upright pictures.. elongated pictures would be better because it decreases the amount of scrolling needed.

You know what, I agree with you now Bruce. That Elton John pic scared me into submission (no offense!). I now invoke the higher powers to revoke the terrible curse that I have inflicted on the forum!

As most of you do, I come to this forum to be informed, to share thoughts and ideas, and quite often I am delightfully entertained in the process. I do not always agree with the opinions I read, and I expect - I even hope - that not all will agree with my opinions; that's as it should be in a public forum.
Some of these images, "per se" are fine, quite attractive, actually. Nevertheless, I find pictures in signatures obtrusive in the same way that television commercials are obtrusive to my viewing pleasure. So far, the signature pictures have had nothing to do with the postings, and because of that it is midly distracting to have to look at someone else's favorite composer- or favorite-performer-of-the-moment while reading his/her post. If people are going to post pictures in their signatures, it would seem more appropriate to post a picture of themselves, and show us whom we are communicating with.
Posting a picture of myself is something I would never do on this forum, however. Having reached that stage in life when self-photographs - as well as mirrors - reveal only horrors, I certainly wouldn't inflict my image on any of you!
Folks - and friends - this is "no big deal." I'm sure that those who wish to post a signature photograph undoubtedly will do so to the varied reactions of all of us - and it is unarguably their right to do so - nor will it deprive me, personally, of the other pleasures of these forums.
I promise that I will try - emphasis on "try" - to say no more about this, unless I'm asked, of course!
Thank you, once again, for letting me stand on my little soap box!
Regards,

Bruce,

The more I started thinking about it, the more it became clear to me that it wasn't the best for this particular forum. Maybe it's because I was the only one doing it for a while and drawing unnecessary attention to myself, or maybe I didn't want to cause Frank any more financial grief in bandwith bills for the server, but since it didn't take off it seemed best to just drop it.

One thing I disagree with:

 Quote:

[/b]

According to that, the only thing that someone should put in a sig is their name. What if someone wanted to put in a quote? Certainly, that doesn't have anything to do with each and every post that someone makes, but rather is a tidbit of their musical tastes. A picture is, IMHO, only slightly more than this. I post Liszt...someone else can post Richter, and so on ad infinitum, the point being that maybe the person wanted to share this. The only way which we can have a completely neutral sig is if someone just writes their name (as you have done) or some other type of salutation.

We can go on and on about semantics and say that a signature is exactly that and nothing more, but I feel that an internet forum sig has, naturally, more capability for color and expression than just writing an e-mail or a letter. I've seen some forums where almost everyone has a picutre in their sig, most bigger than those that were experimented with here, and they ALWAYS serve as background to the dialogue. Granted, there are some more creative ones which grab attention, but the idea is that they are extraneous, and in no way are intended to be more important than the dialogue itself.

Brendan

And my 2 cents worth (again).
I don't mind the pictures if they are kept small and don't get out of hand.
I'd prefer they aren't used every time in every message, particularly if the individual post frequently (and I would encourage people to post, that's what the forum is for).

Piano World is now averaging well over 1 million hits a month, so I need to be prepared to deal with growing bandwidth anyway.
Besides, my goal is for Piano World to be the best place on the Internet to go for anything to do with pianos. To meet this goal, I have to be willing to obsorb the growing pains (read: $$).

Hi all,

After some thought, I decided not to use my favourite composrer and singer. I did find a small piano .gif that I thought would be appropriate. It's not flashy, not big and won't be used everytime I post. I can clearly see how attaching images to the signature can get out of control very quickly. I'm sorry for eating up the bandwidth my graphics ate up and any trouble they caused. Take care.
