Sorry Packa but I must ask one more question before I go on my merry way and buy my son his first piano.

I see very little information here about Baldwin Pianos. Judging by the retail price range should I be considering the Baldwin 243e and 248e models along with the Yamaha u-1, Kawai k-3, and Charles Walter 1500? As a non piano person, Baldwin and Yamaha were the only brands I knew before I started my search.

Thanks again for all the help.
One day my son will be a great pianist or baseball player. Or he could always end up playing the organ at the stadium. Charles Walter 1500

Yes I think the Baldwins you mentioned are worth considering. They also make an even taller upright, the 6000 that is a very good piano. They are all well made and very durable. The prices on new Baldwins has gone up, but maybe you could find a good deal. Also, there are a ton of used 243s out there and you can get a lot of piano for the money. 243s are also called Baldwin Hamiltons. Baldwin also sells an upright made in China that has the Hamilton name on it, so it can be confusing. The 243s have the word Baldwin in the center of the fallboard and the word Hamilton will be to the right on recent models and to the left on older models. The Chinese pianos have the word Hamilton in the center. The Yamaha U1 is a great piano and you can't go wrong getting one, but the Baldwin's would be worth a look. Larry

I thought very highly of the last Baldwin 248 and 6000 that I saw in a store. They would have been on my short list of uprights to consider if I were in the market.

On Baldwin Hamiltons that I've seen from the 1950s (There's a 1955 model and a 1951 model that I play on semi-regular occasions), they say "Hamilton" in the center, and "Built by Baldwin" in small print on the right. Inside, in the upper right of the plate, "Built by Baldwin" is cast into the plate.
