This is a great loss. His output for piano was fairly small, but he was a truly wonderful composer.

I think he wrote more for solo viola than for piano. It is a great loss of a very innovative composer. I remember hearing his "Sequenze" (sp.) years ago.

It's a shame. Heard his many Sequenzas and a friend of mine premiered a piano duo piece he wrote for John Harbison's birthday party called "Touches" which was lovely...it was never published, though, and I never got the rights to perform it :-( as it was only meant for that one occasion... It is always sad to see great composers go.

So many important artists in the past year have died. Berio was one of the most innovative composers of the post-War era. I can't remember what conservatory he was dean of (Florence?), but I remember reading an article saying that he once decreed that no music before 1950 was allowed to be performed for the whole school year. I think that he caved from the outrage of professors and students and changed the date to 1900.

A great composer and a great loss.
