I'm in my mid 40s and have always wanted to learn how to play the piano. My wife and kids are now taking lessons. My typing skills stink...no speed, lots of mistakes, etc.

Is it reasonable to assume I would struggle with piano? Starting at this stage of life, I wouldn't have any illusions of becoming great....I'd be mainly interested in classical music. I also think it would be good for the kids to see me learning along with them.

Any thoughts from teachers / players?

Thanks,
John

your typing will probably improve.

It's fun to practice the piano, but not so rewarding to practice typing. You are probably a good typist waiting to flower.

I have seen some pretty good pianists pecking at their computer keyboards with one finger on each hand. There is no strong correlation between typing aptitude and piano playing aptitude. Go ahead and take the piano lessons that you have always wanted!

(I was so tempted to make a "get your typewriter regulated and see if it helps" joke, but then realized that you were asking a sincere, serious question that demands a like response. Good luck! smile )

Someone once told me that they were surprised that I was such a lousy typist because I could play the piano. The connection had honestly never occured to me.

Oh crap! Does that mean I'll never be able to play the way I eventually want to? I'm a pretty darn good typist (I'm typing right now!) and pretty darn accurattte too! SEK John, I say, take lessons and have a blast. I know I am! laugh

I won't even point out the irony in your post. Look at it closely.
