Besides his Chopin Ballades, I never hear much about Zimmerman on the forums. I see he released a Bartok conertos cd earlier this year, as well as a Rachmaninov 1 & 2 concertos disc early last year. Has anyone listened to these? How are they?

Other than that, anyone know what he's working on? And/Or if he's touring?

He's still actively touring and is coming KC next season!

I've just seen him in Brussels on June 7th. Great concert. He played Mozart's K330 sonata, Ravel's Valses Nobles et sentimentales and a few Chopin pieces (fourth ballade, four mazurkas op. 24 and the second piano sonata). One of the best recitals I've ever been to \:\)

Lives and teaches in Switzerland, actively gives recitals, and occasionally records. The lastest recording of his is the Bartok 1st concerto on Boulez's 80th birthday celebration recording of the complete Bartok concertos. I believe I read a while back that he was recording the Brahms first (again), but haven't heard anything on it lately. He's one of the slowest active recording artists, averaging about 1 recording every 3-4 years, sometimes much longer. This is in part to him being a (an almost scary) perfectionist, something he himself admits to.

Anyone heard his Rachmaninov? How is it compared to other big name recordings of the 1st two concertos? (because I'm sure it's pretty darn good, seeing as it's Zimmerman we're talking about here)

The Zimerman Rachmaninoff 1st is easily my favourite recording of that concerto. Earl Wild ranks a close second.

The second concerto is slightly less successful. Zimerman's playing is excellent, but I found the orchestra a bit uninspired and the sound quality lacking. It is one of the better recordings, certainly one of my 10 favourites.
