Where can I find information on the political bias (if any) of the major (or minor) music schools such as Curtis, Juilliard, and such?

What are you talking about?

You're not going to find a website saying who is affiliated with whom, and I doubt that anyone who attended either of those places would post in public about it.

Try changing your perspective. Major schools always have some sort of political bias, I don't see why conservatories would be any different.

Colin, (hey we have the same name!), it would perhaps be wise to try to find people who have gone to these schools and ask them.

I certainly would not want to go to a school with a religious or republican slant.

Why not?

I happen to disagree with some of the very loudly-spoken politics at my very liberal university, but I still get a good education.

In fact, I think our university president acted very foolishly for quite some time over one particularly recent political issue; I still can't believe she (and many of the students on campus) took it so far.

But that's life. As long as my teachers are teaching me about Beethoven and Brahms, and not Bush and Buddha, what's the big deal? (Can you tell, they also teach me alliteration. ;\) ) And even if they do make political remarks now and then, so what?

Brendan, shouldn't you be working on your musicianship rather than trying to get a negative reaction out of me?

Schools themselves don't have biases, and at public universities, faculty are not allowed to use university resources (email, instructional time, etc...) to advance political agendas.

However, the atmosphere at most schools often does lean one way or the other. The only way to find out, though, is by word of mouth. Southern Methodist, for example, is a pretty right-leaning school, but last time I visited, the music school had a pretty liberal atmosphere.

In other words, that's what campus visits are for. Go visit and meet people, and you'll get a pretty good feel for what's going on.

The political bias would not decide for me, but it seems like it could be a factor in making a choice. Thanks for the replies, and thanks, Kreisler, for the advice.
