I was wondering, what are some of the great modern composers of piano literature today.I will never tire of playing the classics, but I would also like to play some modern classical compositions.Does anyone know what is available.Or,even if their printed music is unavailable, is their any modern composers in general that you know of which I might be unaware of.

i enjoy listening to a lot of modern piano music, some composers worth listening to, are:
pierre boulez: in particular his second sonata..pollini performs it amazingly

Luciano Berio: sequenza #4 is a very interesting peice...very colorful

Schnittke: has written a fair bit of piano music...his piano sonatas are really good...there very mosdern but still retain a sort of romantic melody that many others dont have...

and Oliver Messainne (sp)...who is truly an amazing composer...his vignt regards pour le enfant jesu, and his Catalogue de oixeux...are amazing compositions

i think all of these composers are of lasting value and equal to their predesessors and well worth the listen
modern music may be different and take a fair bit of getting used to, but i think it can provide much enjoyment and mental stimulation if your looking for change.

enjoy

Michael Nyman. He is awesome! He wrote music for movies like "The Piano." If you haven't seen that movie, you should see it, at least to hear the beautiful music.

Glenn Gould in regards to music:

The problem begins when one forgets the artificiality of it all, when one neglects to pay homage to those designations that to our minds-to our reflect senses, perhaps-make of music an analyzable commodity. The trouble begins when we start to become so impressed by the strategies of ours systematized thought that we forget that it does relate to an obverse, that it is hewn from negation, that it is but a very small security against the void of negation which surrounds it.

Olivier Messiaen is one of my favorites --as is Boulez. Another contemporary "name" composer worth exploring is William Bolcolm. Check out his etudes for piano.

Here is a list compiled by pianist/lecturer Thomas Moore @UMBC. It's quite extensive, probably more than most people care to know...
