You'll have a great 5 weeks at Northwestern's National High School Music Institute.

Some all-star high schoolers attended this one.

I went there this past summer(Northwestern). Only difference was for Bassoon and not piano so I cant speak for the piano division, but I would think it is is a good program and the pianists were very good.

Check out IU's Piano Academy. I went last year; it helped push me to a new level of playing and thinking about music.

Great teachers and lots of practice time. I did feel a little micro managed by the paranoid staff ( I was 17 and had just graduated from high school at the time) but overall the experience was positive.

If you go, expect to spend a LOT of time listening to others play. There are many concerts, master classes, and what they term "interactive sessions" 95% of which are required

Overall, I recommend it to other young pianists.

$2-5k is pretty much the standard range for most music festivals.

of course, some are free, but you have to already play at a high level to go to those.

apparently there are just a bunch of starving musicians with rich parents.... wink

I'm finding that there are a lot of competitions that have good amounts of prize money available. And for pity's sake, this next one that I've gotten myself into had so few people that they called my teacher a week after the application deadline and asked if I wanted to enter. They pick four people from the CD round (which I think I can make it through) and then first prize is $500, 2nd is $250, and 3rd is $100. Heh, when I saw was the first prize was I just said "bring a song I haven't played in four months up to audition tape level in two days? SURE! no problem!" smile It's crazy, but it's working out so far... Anyway, long way of saying that competitions can help finance things, especially if not many people enter. (hopefully)

It was little cheaper last year and their is financial aid and there are others like Interlochen that are too expensive for me. Oh and it helps my school bought the bassoon I use because its 6000 dollars and I defeintly couldn't afford that.

Well I mean that it's the schools but I'm using it while I'm there. They bought it a year ago but most people who can afford their instrument buy their instrument but bassoons are in the more expensive range.
