as the title sais...

For the past few weeks, I've been practicing 4-5 hours/day because I have many performances and juries coming up now that the Fall semester is coming to an end. But on any average day when I don't have too much pressure, I would practice 2-3 hours more or less. I know I should be practicing a lot more.

What about you poeple?

I am also a piano major, and I'd say between 3-5 hours is what I usually do. Sometimes more if I have a concert coming up. I also like to compose, so sometimes I burn some of that time with improvising, but it all works out anyway. \:D

I used to play for 5 hours a day, but now I practice about 2 hours, 3 hours at most. But I seem to learn more in those 2 hours than I used to learn in those 5 hours. I learned how to practice and I don't feel I need more. About an hour of just technique and the other I just spend on practicing piano literature and playing for fun. I also try sightreading as much as possible, and I usually do that as a warmup.

I usually end up playing something whenever I walk by the piano. I don't know about straight practice, but I at least *play* the piano at least 4 hours a day. Then there are those school days when I've actually skipped classes to go into the practice rooms and play through some pieces. Like Paul and Crashtest, I'm a music major too, and I spent a LOT of time practicing for my recital last month.

Typically 6 hours a day, provided I've got nothing major going on.

When I come home from work I play for at least an hour or until my husband has finished cooking dinner!

When I am home on wknds, I play at least an hour at a time and a few times a day if there isn't much going on. Especially if something has to be cleaned or repaired, I will play longer than usual!!

I have always played for my own pleasure but I have been entertaining the thought of playing in front of a group of people at an open stage recital in the spring. I'm getting way to old to continue on with a phobia of playing the piano in front of people and totally loosing it!!

Please don't recommend any books or breathing exercises! I'm to old for that too!! \:D

The best thing to do is just to play for people, and play some more! After a while you see what your natural reactions will be and how to control them.

2-3 hours mostly on normal conditions. Weekends, saturday i use to make like 4 hours between 18.00 and 22.00 and then hang out...

under contest or exam conditions. As much as possible (6 hours, 8 hours maybe)

I try to get 6 on weekdays, with school that makes my days ridiculously long, with my max break being like 10 minutes \:\(

Weekends I go 8 hours. It's really hard for me to go past 8, but if there is something I have to play in coming up I might go 10 or more.

Lol....wow...I guess most of you guys are piano majors and all that. Piano is just my pastime hobby that I do for fun, and usually practise no more than 1 hour a day. But I guess it's a lot different if you're trying to do it for a living.

When I have no school, between six and eight. When school is in, about three, sometimes if I'm lucky four.

I really think it's how you practice not how long you practice.

Same here. I try to play at least 1 hour, but sometimes it gets really difficult because of my studies. I think I could go up to 3 hours (for example in holidays) but there's no way I could do 6 or 8 hours. IMO, social life is important.

I practice in short segments, probably around 20 minutes each, very frequently. I have a digital by my computer so I can work on things. Also, at school I have time to play between classes. It probably all amounts on average to many many hours. I don't count.

It's not about quantity of practice anyway but quality! A little quality practice is better than hours and hours of crappy practice. How you practice is important. Of course, lots of quality practice would be best.

Practicing is just so fun for me. I try to get at least 2 hours a day on the weekdays and more on the weekends. I need a mute function on my piano so I don't make my parents crazy. Is this a problem for you too?

Definitely a problem in my household. I can't play after 10:30pm because my brother goes to sleep!! So it leaves me no choice but to get in my car, drive to my school(10mins away), and practice there.

Paul,
10:30pm seems like a late time already for me. I wish I could play around 9 or 10. I often drive to school at 6:30 am and practice an hour before going to work and then come back to practice. It seems like school is my 2nd "home" for practicing.

About 2 usually. If I get to practice as much as I'd like to, then about 3-4.

With a new infant around the house - I'm lucky if I can get in 10 minutes. And usually 5 of those minutes are spent practicing with one hand while I hold the baby with the other...
