Doing all the last bit of prep work for my jury and ARCT exam pieces before I give them the few months they need to sit pretty under the hands and "comfortablize" so that I have no indecisions whatsoever starting each one regardless of how nervous I feel (used to be a big problem for me... and hopefully by now isn't anymore... but still might be!). The pieces are:
Bach - Prelude (h.n.=44)and Fugue (q.n.=58)in Eb/D#- Book I
Beethoven - Tempest - not absolutely sure on tempos, maybe Movt I Allegro at h.n.=112?, Movt II at e.n.=84, Movt III at dotted e.n. = 80?
Schumann - In Der Nacht, #5 from Fantasiestucke op.12 - maybe q.n.=126 in the outer sections and q.n.=112 in the middle section?
Ravel - Vallee Des Cloches, #5 from Mirroirs, about q.n.=50
Prokofiev - Sonata #3, Outer Allegros and after first moderato q.n. = 144, first moderato q.n.=100, second moderato q.n.=80, con effeto-con elevatione q.n.=100
Chopin 10/9 - maybe dotted e.n.=76?
Anyways, I'm pretty happy with my tempos for all the other pieces, but am totally open to suggested alterations if anyone sees something that looks wrong. When I say "maybe" for some of them, I'm not totally set on the tempo just yet, so am especially open to suggestions for those ones, besides the Tempest. Thanks!!

Bach tempos are an individual thing, but I'd want to take the Fugue significantly faster (72 perhaps); it's a fairly 'esoteric' piece (old-fashioned and academic even for Bach), and a more flowing speed might help to sustain musical interest. (And I'd probably be a shade slower in the Prelude, but only a shade. ) I agree exactly with the tempos you suggest for the first two movements of the Tempest. As already mentioned in the other current Tempest thread, I would take the last movement slower (around 69); it's only marked Allegretto after all, so a reasonably relaxed speed is called for. The Chopin sounds about right, assuming you really mean dotted quarter (crotchet), not dotted eighth (quaver). Best wishes, Matthew

thanks. I'll try adjusting the tempos for the Bach, Beethoven III, and let you know if I decide to keep them (I think I will, except in the Beethoven I might compromise for a little bit faster). And yes, the Chopin is indeed for the dotted quarter.

Looks like I've settled on 42 for the Prelude, 66 for the Fugue, and 72-76 for the Beethoven III. Thanks alot for the tempo advice, it really helped!
Is anyone familiar with the Schumann, Ravel and Prokofiev?

You are welcome. I just hope you don't regret taking it. At least, not before it's too late ... Best wishes, Matthew
