Are there any physically impossible-to-play classical pieces out there apart from the insanely difficult pieces? I mean ONLY one pianist could play it but nobody else could play it?

Take the famous Prealudium in C from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier of Johann Sebastian Bach.

This piece containts arpeggio-style and is not difficult to play.

Succes

As in physically impossible for any pianist to play? I don't think so, as publishers probably wouldn't see much point....

I'm currently working on a solo piano piece which is literally impossible to be performed by a pianist. It is supposed to be for midi instead.

And yes, I know I'm cheating! laugh

There was a lesser-known pianist of yore who had strange hands and consequently, his music was supposed to be quite difficult (if not impossible) for normal pianists without his strange hands - and I don't mean just large hands, though they WERE large. I can't remember the name at the moment, perhaps someone else can dredge it up from their memory?

Albenez's Iberia, I think, comes close. Arrau could play it, but there are sections in one part that require key jumps requiring virtually superhuman technique. There are probably a handful of people in the world who could do it. Islamey's another piece which is so difficult that professional pianists are scared to death to put it in their repertoire, unless they have superhuman chops and an ego to match.

I've always had trouble getting Sorabji's Sonatas up to tempo.

The best part was when it said "arranged by accident".

That score does not look like Sorabji to me, forgive me if I'm wrong.

Otherwise, I guess you have different priorities. Now that you have mastered the Bach WTC, the Beethoven sonatas, Chopin and Liszt, then on to Prokofiev and Stravinsky... perhaps some Alkan... well now time for Sorabji.

Go for it, mate! laugh

It is Sonata #1, an early work.

I call cheating! It's obvious the Death Waltz is not for piano.
