A new facebook group has just been launched!

"We Bang Steinways!" is a community for all piano fans, piano students, pianists, and piano majors from conservatories and universities across the world!

If you are already on the facebook, simply visit the following link and request to join (You will have to be logged in):

http://ucsb.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2204722457

I tried to join, but it wouldn't let me because I don't have a college or work e-mail address. frown

Is the distinction in being associated with a group called "We Bang Steinways" not somewhat dubious?

Facebook is an online yearbook for high school and college students. It's kind of like a tightly controlled MySpace - You have to register with your official school email address and you can only view people at your own school.

They also let faculty in, so I have account as well. (A lot of faculty use it because students post pictures and we can learn people's names in our larger lecture classes. The funny thing is, most students don't know we're there, so it's always kind of interesting when we see beach pictures from that weekend when they were "too sick to get out of bed, much less do homework.")

You can't. You have to have a valid educational domain to register.

You can view anyone at any school who has listed you as a 'friend'. But if you aren't listed as a friend, you can still see someone's profile if that person is at your school (and hasn't blocked all non-friends).

How would you go about doing this in the UK? I assume when I am at Uni you get provided with a free email account, would I just use that?

In order to join Facebook, your school has to be 'on the list.' Check here to see if it is:

http://www.facebook.com/help.php?tab=newnetwork

If it's not on the list, you can send in a request.

You SHOULD be able to join... there are members in the community from England... I know that there are couple Oxfordians. If your school is not on the list, e-mail the facebook administrators and they will add your school! But go sign up for the facebook first and check.

With regard to excuses, there's a great story of a putdown a female professor is supposed to have delivered to one of her students. Standing in front of the class, she said, "The final examination is next Thursday. I will accept absolutely no excuses from any of you for not being there." The smart alec guy in the back of the class shouts, "What if I'm in a state of total, complete, and utter sexual exhaustion?" The professor responded, "Then I guess you'll have to write the examination with your other hand."

Sounds discriminatory. I'm 62 and haven't been a college student in decades, and have no intention of being one. So I'm left out. Have a good time by yourselves.

Maybe you could walk over to University of Minnesota tomorrow and get hired as an adjunct professor of piano? Then you can join us!

Otherwise, we'll just continue to enjoy ourselves.

Facebook is actually one of the better ones. You have to have a valid school address, and there are plenty of options for what you do and do not want to post and/or be visible.

The problems with MySpace and Facebook and other similar sites is not inherent in the sites. The problem is that so many of the users have no clue how public it is. (Which is one of the reasons I'm often telling students that faculty and administrators have access to Facebook.)
