I've just recorded myself playing Chopin's nocturne Op 72 No. 2.
I'm planning on recording a CD to give to my grandparents as a gift.

I'd love to hear some comments, good or bad!
I know it's not perfect and I'm actually still working on the piece so it's certainly not a definitive recording. And though my grandparents would never tell me it is bad, I still want to give them something of decent quality laugh

Here's the link :

Hope it works...

Nunatax

PS: I know I still have to work on those trills wink

Nunatax,

Consider changing the file name such that it does NOT contain the # sign. The # sign has special meaning when used in the a web address URL and some browsers don't handle it as well as others. That's why Hyperion had trouble openning it.

Also consider posting it to the Member's Recording Forum for easier reference in the future. wink

(Haven't listened totthe recording yet, but definitely will, real soon. Thanks for posting it.)

Thanks for the tip, Axtremus. I changed the filename. Hope it works better now!

And I'll post it in that other forum too! Thanks!
(Didn't know it existed shocked )

I signed up at the site, but now just get a MSPlayer icon that does nothing. Could be my computer though - I have problems with blocking software.

Yup, that works. smile

Just to remind people that you have to right-click and choose 'save as' to download it.

I will listen to it later and comment.

Nice job. I like that piece a lot and play it too. One thing. In the middle section where the left hand plays the triplets, i think your playing a d natural instead of a d sharp.

What did you use to record? The quality is quite good.

Very nice!! thumb And since you already know about the trills, I need not mention it.
Great effort! (I just love musical playing laugh ).

Ok, yeah, I'd like to know how this was recorded as well. I like the quality and I don't hear any background noise.

Was it recorded in a soundproof studio?

Hi Nunatax,

Great job! The sound quality is very good, and so is your technique. I too love this piece, and play it every now and then. I think you did fine on the trills.

You play everything at a very even tempo, which is great. I usually add more rubato all over the place, but my teacher says I overdo it sometimes, so maybe that's not such a good thing... if I can come up with a decent-quality recording, I'll post it & see what everyone else thinks.

A few more comments:

- As another poster noted, you play the bass notes of bars 33, 37, 39 and 41 as D flat; in my edition they're D# (not that my edition is necessarily right, but I haven't heard it played as Db).

- I think you played the first C# in bar 27 untrilled; it's trilled in my edition (I play it trilled, for what it's worth).

- It sounds like you play the last left-hand note in bar 29 as A-natural. My edition has it as A#, but I play it as A-natural like you did; I think it sounds better (I heard it that way on some recordings, it wasn't my own idea to change it!)

- In the middle part (bars 31-41) I think you're playing some extra notes in the right hand that don't appear in my edition. This part of the piece seems to be played differently in all the recordings I've heard, though, so here again I don't think my edition is necessarily the final word on that.

- In the 3rd bass note of bars 59 and 61, my edition shows E#, but I play it as you did, as E natural -- sounds better to keep the 'happy ending' till the very end in my opinion.

A friend of mine played this piece in a recital last year, and she played some other notes here and there differently from the way I'm used to hearing... it seems like there is a bit of difference between different editions of this piece; anybody know why? By the way, it's not marked as Op72/2 in my edition, just #20 (Posthumous).

So all in all, I'm sure your grandparents will be very proud!

What kind of piano do you have, and what equipment did you use to record it?

Thank you all for your comments and compliments!

I was indeed playing everything but a D# in that passage Minime, seems that I’ve been doing that wrong from the beginning whome [Linked Image]
Thanks for pointing it out!

No, JimmyH, it was not recorded in a soundproof studio, it was recorded in a rather noisy living room laugh But that was not a problem since I recorded it on my digital piano, a Yamaha CLP 990. I then attached its AUX-exit directly to a CD-writer and recorded it.

Paulie,

There seem to be lots of different scores out there [Linked Image] In the movie “The Pianist” it also has some different notes. Don’t know why, I do know that there are editions which contain other suggestions beside the main score, based on ancient scores I believe.
On my “internet edition” it says Nocturne, Brown-Index 49. However I have a CD of Daniel Barenboim which calls the first posthumous nocturne Nocturne in e-moll op. post. 72 No.1 so I thought it was not wrong.
Anyway, I hope to hear your interpretation here one day!

Thanks again for all your comments!
And I'll post my final recording!
