I would have a difficult time going from a Yamaha vertical to a Steinway D. The actions are totally different. It can be difficult to go from one familiar type of action to another unfamiliar type of action. This is one of the reasons that professional pianists tend to like to practice on pianos that will be close to the pianos that they will be playing on.

I agree that a good Steinway D is a wonderful instrument to play. I have played some really bad ones, though. I am not as brand-bound as some, my favorite piano is the one that allows me to play with a great deal of expression, clarity, evenness, and variety of color. Could be Steinway or it could be any number of other brands of pianos. (In other words, I am ducking the question smile )

Katie,

Yah I am very very very very very very impressed with the type of group work that my teacher does,

I have another recital in June on a beautiful Steinway at the jubilee ohhhh I can't wait......

We also have several group lessons a year where we play on her grand alogn with other kids in my grade level....( she usually groups grades liek this because she doesnt have thousands of students: 1-3 4-6 6-9 and advanced)

I still don't know why we don't take our lesson on her beautiful grand in stead of her modest Heintzman upright.....

??????

My college (I graduated last year) had a Steinway D in the recital hall. It was hardly ever in use after about 10 pm so frequently I got to practice on it. There was about a half octave in the mid-treble that sounded, strangely, duller than the rest, but other than that it was a fantastic piano in a great acoustic, though it did tend to be a little loud. However my memory tells me that I liked the Bechstein D at Graves Recital Hall in Columbus even better, but that was eight years ago, so maybe my memory has "improved" the piano.

The best piano i have ever played is a Shigeru Kawai. It just seemed to be alive! It was like it knew what i was feeling as i was playing! Then it made the music sound like i was feeling! I've never experienced that on any other piano. I've played them all and no other piano has ever felt Alive! The Shigeru is amazing!
