Hi:

I have been playing the piano for two years and would like to know if there are any preferred exercizes to enhance finger speed?

Thanks,

Felix.

Hanon excersizes are good not only for speed but for development of the 4th and 5th fingers ( which tend to be the weakest, as they share tendons).

I thought that it was 3 and 4 that shared tendons....

In order to play faster, you have to learn how to "grip" the piano keys, so my teacher says... so she is having me do "finger chinups" while playing all the major scales before I start to practice my pieces.

I asked a teacher experienced in working with adults for some suggestions for speeding up a particular passage in one of my pieces, and got the following suggestions.

1. Play the whole passage with one finger; your 4th, thumb, then 5th. This teaches the arm how it has to move when you play it.

2. Play each note staccato making sure each note is in fact staccato and not slurred.

3. Play each note 2 times with the correct fingering.

4.. Play in short groups of 2, then 3, then 4., then 5, then 6 notes very fast with a very long pause in between to regroup and relax.

5. Be patient, it does take time.

Can't give you a success story at this point. I'm working on it. See # 5 above. \:\)
