I'm still pretty new here, so I guess I'm still kinda trying to get to know everyone here a bit. What are your current projects, and what are some things you hope to start working on soon?

What I'm working on now:

Beethoven-Pathetique Sonata (C Minor)
Rachmaninov-Prelude in E-Flat Major
Bach-Prelude And Fugue in D Minor (book 1 of WTC)
Brahms-Intermezzo in A Major (Op 118 no 2)

I'm also keeping the Schubert Imromptu in E flat, Chopin Etude in C Minor (revolutionary) and Bach P&F in F# Major under my fingers a bit-my teacher wants me to perform them soon (which frankly, I'm sick of performing them).

Soon, I hope to be working on:

Liszt-Un Sospirro (how do you spell that?)
Prokofiev-Diabolical Suggestion
Rachmaninov-Prelude in G Minor (I know, everybody does it, but still)
Chopin Scherzo in B minor
Chopin Ballade in G Minor
Beethoven-Waldstein Sonata

Not all at once, obviously, but it's still stuff I want to play soon enough.

I love the Op20 Scherzo. It's a piece that I want to learn in the future.
How would you rate it's difficulty compared to the others. What would be the order of these scherzi from the least to the most difficult?

Fortunately, the Brahms isn't as hard as it is long for the most part. It's the type of piece where if you plan on practicing it for four hours, you will spend two of those hours working on 5-10 measures.

I've gotta pick up some solo pieces for my Jury in fall - I was thinking of some more Messiaen and maybe the Bach E minor toccata.

It's summertime, so I'm goofing off with no "heavy" items in my play list...

My real focus is on:

And noodling on Moussorgsky's Pix at an Exhibition. Not sure if this will really hold my interest long enough to put it on my study list, but I'm having a blast playing it now and enjoying my new piano's performance on the bass lines... really fun, although my solo performances around the house by myself are pretty far over the top.

For the fall when kids go back to school, I'd like to pick up a few more pieces, but don't have a clue. Any ideas out there, based on my current stuff? (I'd say I'm full-out to my highest capability on something like LvB's Pathetique, FWIW.)

Like Nina, I thank Jodi on the Ashokan Farewell suggestion. That and Mozart Fantasia in Dm are the summer projects. That and trying to take in more theory, which just seems to escape me...

I skim thru an edition of Shubert dances for sight reading practice and my 12 year old son and I are working on two Robert Vandall duets.

After school begins again and my youngest enters school, I hope to work on a Mozart Sonata and would love to do some Brahms.

hey classical player, i think we have similar taste. I am working on almost the same line-up of pieces. what are some of the pieces you would like to someday play but right now you consider them out of your league ?
I'm thinking of rach prelude Gminor, Beethoven Waldstein, Tempest sonatas, Weber Invitation to a Dance

StanSteel, I am not sure how I would rate Op. 20 against the other Scherzi. They each have their own unique technical problems that you have to solve, so in that respect I would tend to rate them pretty equally. I have heard people say that Op. 31 is easier than the others, and it does tend to get played more often. However, I think it's difficulty depends on how you play it. Same with the others.

Sorry I don't have a better answer. Part of the problem is that I have played a lot of Chopin, so I was actually able to to learn these pretty quickly - Op. 20 took two weeks and Op. 31 took two, working on them part time. Of course, the polishing process took much longer and is still continuing

Yes I also wanted to learn Beethovens Waldstein.
I was thinking more Chopin, maybe some of his etudes!
Also liszt hungarian rapsody N.2..
And I was going to learn Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto in a year or 2!

But after I finish all of the pieces I listed above in my previous post, I will either learn Bach's keyboard concerto N.5, or Mozarts piano concerto 21.....

I want to see something by Messaien. I've never seen any of his works, and by what Brendan has raved about, I want a piece of it too! ^.^ Although, I don't know if I'm capable...

Nina- I sang at a Diamondbacks game! (I just noticed the "Go Diamondbacks" at the bottom of your post). It was just a spring training game, so you might not have been there, but still. It was fun.

Anyway, pieces that I'm working on:
- Prokofiev: Impulse (Op. 4 no. 2)
- A Haydn Sonata (It's in F major. I don't know any other classification, but I like it alot!)
- Chopin: Ballade no. 1 (One of my favorite piano pieces ever!)

as for the order of difficulty of chopin's 4 scherzi, and of course it will be different for each individual, i find the c# and b minor (1 and 3) considerably more difficult than the b-flat and e-major. but that's just me...

Wow, for a second I thought I was reading my own post. Not many people are familiar with Debussy's Pour Le Piano suite, but I think it's a masterpiece. The Toccata is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard for piano and easily the hardest piece I've ever tried. What do you think of it MD? Do you think I'm just exaggerating the technical challenges? Quite frankly, I feel that if I can master the Toccata, I can play even some of the most virtuosic repetoire. I'd like to get feedback from someone who has actually tried it.

I'm actually working on 2 Bach Preludes in C, one from WTC and the other from 12 Little Preludes. I'm also going to start on Fantasy Impromptu Op 66.

My dream would be Beethoven's Piano Sonata 8. Not to mention Moonlight Sonata, and Mozart's Rondo from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.

Does anyone else here believe in quality, not quantity? Just noticed that some people are listing 5-8 works in their current practice routine.
