oh yes, it's great. I have a friend who plays the **** out of that piece - he had to work some 6-8 hours a day for 9 days to memorize the thing, heh... not like learning a bach english suite exactly :p

Have you an idea for learling a piece of Ligeti but less difficult ? Other study or other piece of Ligeti ?...

For easier etudes, try "Cordes a vide" or "Arc-en-diel" from book one, although they are by no means 'easy'.

For Ligeti music that actually IS easy to play, try some of the pieces from 'Musica ricercata', the first two for instance.

Maybe "Fanfares", too. It has the polyrhythms typical for Ligeti, but there are only two rhythms at once which is much easier than the three or four simultaneous rhythms in e.g. "Automne à Varsovie".

Agreed on 'Fanfares', although it is still not "easy", but probably a good introduction to the more complex studies.

I bought a CD of Ligeti with works and Musica Ricercata performed by Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
For the scores, I will look more later...

Don't knock the english suites. There are places when even a pianist of Gieseking's skill can't quite play clearly.

Besides, even the French Suites contain inspired music, which is far from the case in the Ligeti Etudes.

I love that video! Not just the playing, but the presentation is so creative...

I strongly recommend looking at the Musica ricercata. Ligeti himself seemed a little embarrassed about those pieces, saying that they were not significant--but actually they contain the seeds of many of his later ideas, and the set as a whole is a surprisingly powerful recital piece.

Alexander, you are right ! my brother made to me the same remark : presentation is so creative. I think that this type of video is good for the music and in this case, for the contempory music.

But the contempory is not understand...

PS : when the contempory music was born, since the chord of 7e O not resolved ?

Also, "En Suspens" from the 2nd book of Etudes is very short (about 2 mins) jazzily atmospheric and not too difficult.
