I've been working on this piece for several months, but am getting discouraged with the middle (Agitato) section. I heard a recording, and it was so fast, that it really made me wonder as I know I will never be able to play it that fast...now I'm wondering if it's worth it to keep practicing all that awkward fingering in the left hand, or to just enjoy the first section, which I can play fairly well.

Is there a recording of this piece on this blog? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey Nightengale, funny coincidence: we both have the same avatar and we've both worked on Op.9, No.3. I haven't finished it either, in fact it's been set aside for a while. I'm thinking of resurrecting it so I can have the whole set, as I already have No.1 and 2.

The agitato section is not so easy. Sometimes when I can't get something in my left hand, I'll mirror the notes and fingering in my right hand to see how I do it, then check how my left hand feels differently than the right. Like where does it feel stiffer/less flexible, like what's the right doing that my left has trouble with. Chances are it'll sound weird in the right because I try to really mirror the pattern of the notes just to get the correct intervals from one finger to the other. Sometimes this gives me clues.

Thx for your reply! Wow, NY, you're up late! i put a piano disc on my baby grand kawaii so I can practice late at night. I've done Nocturnes 1,2,3,4 (very difficult is #4), 8, 15, 19 (not as difficult, but beautiful) & 20a of the Henle edition.

When I was in college my professor and I worked on all of the Chopin Nocturnes over a semester (not worked to perfection, but as an exercise in rapidly learning lots of music to a decent level of proficiency - long story...) Anyway, this one gave me fits, I definitely think it is one of the more difficult ones, especially due to that middle section. But its not impossible - there are certainly harder ones that he wrote. And it is such an incredibly beautiful one in my opinion. Stick with it.

Just like no 12, this beautiful nocturne underplayed and not known very widely because of its technical challanges.
Great that you are studying it! I had my share with no 12.

.. it seems to me that the inherent nature [of the piano tone] becomes really expressive only by means of the present tendency to use the piano as a percussion instrument - Béla Bartók, early 1927.
