With the piano aside of course, what other instrument, or ensemble of instruments (i.e full orchestra) moves you the most? Of course, this may vary from piece to piece, but there are definitely those groups of instruments I favor over others. (Wind quintet...hm my brain starts to eat itself..) laugh

For me, it is an orchestra with chorus- like that found in religous works (like Bach's b minor mass, Haydn's masses, Mozart requiem, etc). What draws me to this is the counterpoint and textures/colors- there is nothing more gratifying for me then to listen to what wonderful sounds come as a result of counterpoint mixed with the human voice.

Secondly, I'd have to say a string quartet. This medium has such depth, from Haydn, Beethoven, to Ligeti and Bartok quartets- it really is a world unto itself.

Violin. Mostly Violin Concerti, like Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius etc.

I also enjoy Masses and Requiems.

I would say the string quartet. just because you can really hear (and feel) the harmonies really easy. second to that wwould be a full orchestra.

a good acapella choir singing some Ockeghem, or the like, is probably my favorite sound on earth.

I adore the oboe.

String quartet and piano quartet, I would say. I love both the timbre and the clarity of line you can get in a good string quartet.

One of our local xmas choral concerts featured Renaissance selections. What I liked most about the concert was the trombone ensemble. I love hearing those perfectly tuned 5ths and 3rds. The trombones produce a lovely, smooth, rich sound. They're fun to watch too.

The oboe. Outside of piano, the oboe is my absolute favorite instrument. It just makes me melt.

After that, I love the bassoon. It makes me swoon. Then the cello. It turns me to jello. But the oboe is the best (after piano, of course!).

Coming back to piano again in my middle age, and enjoying every minute.

Good point...BUT for me its huge orchestral works, or basically anything choral.

Music is a way of life.

The cello provides the most moving sound and music to my ears other than the piano, I think.

I would also love to have Nat King Cole's singing voice.

Oh pulease.

I personally like oboe. I really can't stand most violin playing, but cello is pretty good.

Vox ensembles and choirs!
I'm really excited cause piano aside, I'm part of my school's choir (I'm a bass-baritone) and we are presenting next year Carmina Burana to celebrate the school's 50 year anniversary.
We also performed with our orchestra last week "Va pensiero" and some christmas carols medley. The orchestra also performed 5 waltzes... it was a great presentation.

Other than Moserrat Caballe, who consistently moves me, definitely the string quartet. I enjoy the intimacy and conversational qualities of the string quartet.

And I'm a sucker for a good marching band in a big patriotic parade.
