Yesterday I paid a visit to my tech who is working over my Fischer upright and I brought home the front panels to polish up a bit. That is, if it's possible or even a good idea. I am told pianos from the 1890s are finished in shellac. Is this true? What could I use to polish or shine up the finish without fear of harming or discoloring it? Is a good automotive cleaner wax a good or bad idea? The original finish is in very good condition but after 105 years it does have a touch of oxidation and could use some touching up

Some of the ivories are a little dirty and yellow stained as well. What is best to clean these up?

I did some experimentation on my Schubert which isn't worth enough to hurt and found that automotive paint oxidation remover did wonders on the key tops. Also Mother's automotive wax really brought back the shine to the inside of the piano lid, I assume this is finished in shellac too.

Thank you,
Vaughn

If the keys are real ivory & real dirty,I would suggest using 0000 steal wool to cut through the heavy stuff.Applying pressure at your discretion. If you or your tech has a soft buffing wheel,on a fixed location like a duel grinder & using a block of jewelers ruge, applying ruge to spinning wheel & gently apply key, usualy with the key end in front of you & a grip on upside down key at key front with one hand & the other hand holding firm'ly.Be careful not to catch a loose or unglued part of the key front, top or end,or it can rip off, breaking ivory.Beleave me,it has & can happen. This is normaly a job for a pro,but if you or your tech tries this, wear safety protection for your eyes.
