I have a Kohler & Campbell Upright that I am tuning, and I have broken 2 strings. I am trying to find some kind of chart which will tell me the correct size wire to purchase. Can anyone help me with this?

Also can anyone tell me the age of my piano? the serial number is 169302.

Hey Z- your piano dates to 1915. To
determine wire size, you must measure it with a micrometer. Take that number, in thousandths of an inch, subtract 5, divide by 2 and that will tell you the string size you need. For example, if the string measures 40 thousandths, 40 - 5 = 35 divided by 2 = 17 1/2. The string size is 17 1/2. Be aware you must have piano wire; you cant buy this at the True Value hardware. If you have broken a bass string (usually copper wound), you must have it duplicated by sending it to a string company, or get a "universal" bass string and cut it to the right length......Sam
